Default Put a 4x4 crossmember and steering rack into a 3dr

just put the crossmember and steering column in my 3dr and the fooking two are miles apart i.e the steering coupling and bush are way too short.

is a 4x4 steering column longer? so it protrudes more in the engine bay?

Cheers

All the 4x4 bits slotted in fine in my 3dr so you must have some mismatched components Ryan

The arm that mates to the rack and joins the column is different to the 3dr version and is longer as well, but the column is the same.

Think you need a 4x4 steering colum to rack link/ knuckle thingy...

I've got one here I can measure to see if it's the length you need?

Fuck it don't care if you want the measurement or not, cos you're getting it

Just measured it and it's 375mm long laid flat end to end.

Hope that helps diagnose what bit's needed - I got mine from a dead XR4x4, for £10 after my turbo melted the bush in my last one.

hope you've got different engine mounts too, as they are different as well
but yes, the intermidiate shaft is longer as the rack sits in a different place so your geometry might be out as well

if you are mising the shaft then you'll need to fork out £108 for one from fords as they are 4wd specific

hi jase, there was only the little coupling left on the rack, not the hole unit, i.e it was the clamping section, i have 2 2wd ones here and they come up about 50-60mm short

also need some castle nuts for the rod ends if u have any? i havent got any from what i can find, might have to check my other garage tommorrow.

cheers for those bits i'll have to drop them back to you mate

You can have mine if it's just a temp thing Ryan - the bush is shot though it does actually work, if a little sloppy. However best bet is to rob one from a dead XR4x4 or Cossie in a scrappy. Like I said, mine cost me £10, and is mint. Was even removed for me so I didn't get my hands dirty

Sod buying a new one from Ford

dont know if this helps but the steering columb on my saff 4x4 is adjustable in length.the bottom part that is triangular fits into the rest of the columb via a white plastic bush.use a pair of molegrips and a hammer and it will pull out.

wouldn't be doing that "adjusting" thing if i were you mate, it's all to do with torsional rigidity in the shaft or soemthing when you turn it and the plastic is there to help eliminate the need for a whole shaft if one bit stops working

very techy sort of answer mate,so i wont argue the point.when i built my escos i had to completely strip the steering columb to make a hybrid mk4 escort to cosworth conversion. the triangle bar just slides in or out of the tube. given the structure of the columb, i can see no weakening by extending the triangle bar by the required 60mm.

Probably also plays a safety element in case of a crash, where the column is allowed to collapse, rather than the steering wheel shooting up into your face. I am not sure I'd tinker with it

there is a colapsable section in the top part of the rack where it bolts to the bulkhead, just behind the actual steering portion of the shaft once you've cleared the space for the stalks
on loads of cars you will see in the scrap yards, this section is compacted ut it hsould be twice as long as it is

i've got a pic somewhere showing what i mean so i'll look it up

you can JUST about make it out under the foam but there is a corugated section of metal tube which compresses under impact, much like an evian bottle that you can squash when you are finished with it

and another little story for you:

i've got the shaft that ryans been after, wrapped it up (as anyone who has had a parcel from me will testify, i do tend to make they a little over taped ) and then went to post it
now, this shaft is probably about 15 - 18 inches long and, covered in black duct tape, it could be said to resemble a sawn off
so, i'm walking down the road with it merrly dangling from my hand and these little school kids came in my way and said "where you going?"
now, these little ruffians wern't about to stop me going to the post office so i did a little double take just to be sure they were on the level
"you what?"
"you heard me, where are you going?"
"i'm going to knock you the fuck out if you don't get out of my way" and raised the steering shaft

backing away he said "no, really, where are you going?"
"to the post office, where are you going?"
"to call the police"
and then he ran away

i must admit, i did look a bit gangsta strolling down the road with the duct taped steering shaft in my hand also scared the cashier at the post office as wll when i dropped it on the counter and said "can i borrow some selotape please" if i've had said "give me all your money" she probably would have as well
