If they change the fuel filter it should be ok after a few tanks. My sisters ex did the same to her old 306 diesel when he put a tenner of fuel in it so I got him to brim it with diesel to dilute it. After we drove it until it was close to empty (drove badly and didn't like starting) I changed the fuel filter and was perfect again

You can normally get away with it, if it knackers anything its normally the diesel pump as the diesel lubricates this and when you fill it with petrol it obviously doesn't, so needless to say if you run a diesel on petrol it will put a few 1000 miles wear on the pump

Don't ever put petrol in a modern diesel and drive. Drain and clean tank, fuel filter and fuel hoses first.
The problem is: The high-pressure diesel pump is lubricated by the diesel. Petrol doesn't lubricate so there will be excessive wear to the pump. In a worst case scenario the chippings of the pump can get into the combustion chamber. Need I say any more?

If you put petrol in a modern diesel for god's sake don't start or drive it. A new diesel pump alone can be about 1500 pounds. Of course it always depends on how much petrol is in the diesel. If it's only a few litres you might get away with it. Moreover the diesel doesn't get to the injection pump immedieately, there's quite some fuel in the fuel hoses and filter.

what PeterRST said
if the key has been turned then you are looking at the inner working being fucked at some point
we had this on ne of our connects, it ran fine for about an hour then it was fucked
so we drained the pertrol out and put in diesel and it seemed to be fine again
but after about 3 weeks it was properly fucked again and needed Ł3k spent on the fuel system to get it sorted, we got it done under warranty and sacked the guy who put it in

I pulled into my local garage about a year ago behind a postman pat vauxhall combo. Pat was stood there filling his van up,chatting away to his mate. When i looked up to see what he was doing,i noticed he had the super unleaded hose in his van,and he had put Ł20 in the fucker!
"can i still drive it ?",said pat,
"i think you better ring your boss" i replied.

We had a 56 plate galaxy [2.0 tdci engine] in work recently, topped the tank up with Ł40 worth of bp ultimate unleaded then drove 90 miles with it running like a bag of shit
drained it off and refilled with diesel and a new filter and it drove fine. That said theres a high chance it'll be needing a pump & injectors permaturely.
very expensive business thats for sure, about Ł1k for a pump on average, injectors about Ł250 each + fitting + programming & as said it may be tested and rejected by the warranty company so don't bank on "it's under manufacturers warranty, i don't care.."
On a side note those injectors [2.0 tdci] are on a europe wide backorder indefeinatly apparently and have been for about six weeks so far
So don't bank on if it does go wrong i'll be back on the road next week cos theres a high chance you won't if you have a 2.0 tdci dw10!

as everyone has said
petrol fucks the pump first, when it happnens at work we ALSO have to change the rails pipes when we clean the system out,,, then the injectors will fuck up
reconed pumps are 1000 quid from ford but as said they need programing same as the injectors will also so thats a extra 90 quid plus vat onto of the other labour charges
the high presure ( more than the old ones too) diesels dont EVER use petrol to wash the tank out

Petrol will kill the pump - but being a VW its a PD engine so has what are called unit injectors - each injector is the high pressure pump!
