Have a look at the truck industry, lets see how long it takes for someone to tell me who owns Scania, and its not Saab as the badge suggests...

GM have never owned Fiat, though they did have a reasonable shareholding which was sold down a few years ago at a huge loss.

There had been speculation at the time that the dumping of shares was a way to reduce Fiat's share value ahead of GM exercising their option to buy the remainder, but that never happened and, as stated, the shareholding stayed around the 10% mark.

Quite the reverse, Ford are about the only one not in trouble, and did not receive any cash / backing from any Governments.
And in their current programme of rationalisation by using World models, look like they will be in a very good position when (if ??) things really pick up again

And V.W have got Alfa as number 1 on their shopping list to buy next.

As well as the above, didn't VW buy Porsche or a large stake therein after Porsche bought loads of VW shares which subsequently dropped?

Also missing out Proton / Lotus.

ford are ok i think, well they have just bought the holden engine production line, shipped it over to the uk, and we are now refurbing all the drives and motors off that line

its quite a big project and so far we have done 6 of the 136 drives that will be coming in over the next few months....

Ford have been doing ok since about 2008 and have been getting better since they didn't accept government aid. They refinanced and mortgaged a lot of assets which gave them the working capital to keep going and restructure without needing a hand out. 2.55 billion profit first 1/4 this year would indicate they are doing ok so far!
