Gibson Explorers RULE..... But personally, I prefer the ESP/LTD "lawsuit model"
As used by Mr Hetfield of Metallica
I just think they have cleaner lines, and I prefer most guitars without scratchplates as they look smoother and cleaner
I am soooooooooooo pissed I am left handed tho! Cos can I find a left handed Explorer? Can I fuck!

I've had mine nearly 18 years now.... bought it with money I got for my 21st birthday.
I think I paid £500 for it back then, bought it in a shop on Denmark Street in London, spent half the day wandering up and down Charing Cross Road and Denmark Street playing one shop off against another until I got a deal.
I first saw one back in 1978/79 on the Old Grey Whistle Test, U2 were on, probably one of their first ever TV appearances and The Edge was playing one and I'd just loved the look of it and the sound he was getting and that was it... totally hooked.
Its hard to believe the design has been around since the late 50's, Eric Clapton had/has a 1958 one he played when he was in Cream...
Slash also has a 58 Explorer...

LOL Thrush! i guess i'd be the same left handed.
I'd have the epiphone one, but its just not the same, and kinda pikey lol
£500!!! bargain by todays standards! but then back then £500 was alot of money!
First time i saw one was when Dave Keuning was playing one in a Killers vid. it does sound brilliant!
aye, 1958 they came out in, still look utterly modern!

The Epiphone Explorer is only £282 on gak.co.uk!!!
shame its
A> no good for playing sitting down
B> not as good as the Gibson
Are gak.co.uk one of the cheapest sites around then?
im tempted by this as an early birthday pressie to myself

An explorer is one of the most comfortable guitars to play when sat down, its beautifully balanced
You're thinking of a Flying V that you cant really play sitting down without sticking it between your legs like a Cello....

What is it about the explorers you lot like? I think they are one of the worst looking guitars i've ever seen along with the bc mockingbird that slash used in you could be mine video.

Mike's hit the nail on the head...
Shape and sound..
Cool looking guitar and it has a lovely tone, and at the time it was much cheaper than a Les Paul

The Epiphone model really isn't pikey - it's a good guitar! For comparrison, just play an Epiphone Les Paul and then a 50's neck Gibson Les Paul - there isn't a HUGE ammount of difference between them - and I know some people that have actually bought Epiphone models over the Gibson models purely cos they prefered the tone, weight and feel of the guitar. Remember that every guitar is different, even tho they are much of a sameness - each one has a different feel and a different action....
I for one LOVE the Explorers tho to look at, and they also sound lovely - just as Les Pauls sound lovely. I must admit tho, I still prefer the ESP/LTD version in the sound stakes (and for the smoother looks of the Hetfield models)
