Default Bmw Steptronic - any issues ?

Hey, has anyone any comments good or bad to do with the Bmw steptronic gear shift- i've read bad things about Volvos geartronic system - its on an E46 323i 2000 w reg - thanx

So every 3rd person on PF has a Bmw but no one has 1 word to say on steptronic - right

step tronic iirc (and I can't check this I'm not at work) is just an autobox which you can manually control.

Yes Alex i know but is it weak, electrical glitches etc...? The volvo one had like a 1 sec time delay from changing to actually feeling something happen lol...Or is it better to stick to manual ?

I would take a guess this isn't far from the m3 evo smg setup, which is widely regarded as tempremental and very expensive when it goes wrong.

Yea but this is on 99 cars on, SMG didnt appear till 2003 i think so probs a diffrent set up really.

no, the old e36 3.2's were smg'd [some were anyway]

SMG is a FULLY manual gearbox - and bloody good too.

Steptronic is about as different as you can get.

There is no reason it will go wrong any more often than the std Auto version - but its no manual substitue.
