buy a haynes manual or look in the vehicle's handbook if its still in the original vehicle. if not get haynes/handbook for original vehicle
sorry i cant be more help but heres a tip. dont get cheap shite oil from asda even though you will get the right grade (5w/30 etc.) as it has no specs on the bottle. you need to get the right grade with the right specs like 5w/30 SAE stuff.

i would have thought that would be fine but dont quote me on that because if its wrong and goes bang i'm not takin the blame
even if you just used it for a day then got the right stuff an did an oil + filter change or sumit, should be ok

A CVH will generally run 10w40 semi-synthetic oil fine, although I would stay away from stuff like Castrol GTX Magnatec. If the car is a bit of a smoker, then 15w40 is okay.
Stay away from 20w50 as it will gum up the hydraulic valve lifters.
5w30 is too thin for a CVH, even though Ford recommend it now, remember, Ford also recommend 5w30 for everything other than Cossies, even the Kent and HCS-engined Fiestas are listed as 5w30
I run Millers XSS 10w40 in the Cabriolet (CVH with carb) and used to run it in the XR3i as well. Never had a problem, and changed it every 5k with a genuine oil filter.
The only exception to the rule with a CVH is a Turbo-charged one. The engine itself will take the grade, but a red-hot turbocharger will soon fry the oil. This is where a fully-synthetic oil is better, although you are then limited to 5w40 which can cause a bit of extra oil being burnt in the chambers as it blows by the rings under boost (just ask RS Turbo owners how much they top up their oil compared to "normal" Escort owners)
