Default Cash Discounts from Dealers and Private Sellers: How Much?

If a second hand car was up for £18000 and you were offering cash, what kind of discount would you expect to get?

a) From a dealer/trader

b) From a private seller

Thanks

Well if i were selling a car and it was up for 18k , no matter if the person was offering me cash or whatever i would still want 18k for it , money is all the same to me it would only be going straight to the bank

Fair enough, but if a car is up for £18000 ONO, what is ONO in this case?

Or is it just a case of chancing your arm with an amount and hope you don't offend the seller?

surely the question is how much do you think you should get knocked off ?

personally you try and get as much off as possable but, at the end of the day don't expect to get a single penny knocked off (if that makes sense)

I agree with the ono bit , if its ono you allways offer a bit less than the asking price

If it was me selling a car ONO , if the buyer came with cash it wouldnt make me sell it for any less than i allready had in mind

Dealers dont want cash!!

They'd much rather sell you a finance deal that probably netts them as much profit as the car you bought.
Plus the banks will charge them to pay it in!!

gurnE, Dont ever try to buy anything off me!!

IMO ono means you should only 'expect' to get a few quid off - however, I'm with GurnE on this one, you offer what you want, the seller accepts, negotiates to the price he wants, or chin's ya for being a cheeky twat The other outcome which happens occasionally is that he accepts yr silly offer
Personally if I'm selling, I prefer to set a price that i want to get, no offers - everyone knows where they are then, no messing.

I read a car buying guide by Quentin Wilson and he said anyone who says "No offers" is a prat, and don't bother phoning them. But hey what does he know.

Obviously I don't want to pay £18000 and the seller probably doesn't want it to go for less then £18000, which is where the haggling begins.

But realistically what is the most I could get off, best case scenario £10? £100 £1000?

Take 16.5k and tell them straight thats what you have with you now, take it or leave it! Everyone will try and knock them down, but if its a rareish car (like an EsCos) it could be up for sale for another 6 months just for them to make 17k!

If they think of it like that i'm sure they'll take the money!

LOL.. the seller 'may' be a prat, but if the car is what u want at a price u want to pay, then where is the problem? If the car is worth a load less than the advertised price, then WTF is the benefit in advertising at an inflated price?? just wastes everyone's time. But this is what the punters seem to want..
Every car I've sold I have adopted this attitude, and every one has sold on that basis. Everyone who has offered silly money trying it on has been offered the door..

In your example, if the owner doesn't want it to go for less, then what relevance does haggling have?If he won't accept less, then haggling is just a waste of his time and yours surely?

You just have to offer what it is worth to you, the worst that happens is they tell you to fook off.. nothing lost..

I have a mate that always puts in insulting offers for cars (and loads of other stuff too). Hardly ever told to fuck off, most of the time gets a good price and sometimes an outright steal.

I'd prob go in at 16k if cash.

it all depends on what the seller is willing to accept for the car, most advertised asking prices are whats known as telephone numbers, the seller plucks a number out of thin air based on what he thinks the car is worth, the term ono is inviting people to knock him down, you pay what the car is worth or as cheap as you can get it,
davs2 is correct about getting reported, any cash sale over 10K is reported to the taxman, its nothing to do with whether its declared or not, its to do with money laundering, if you accept cash payments for 10K and above you have to prove the identity of the person who gave you the cash.

try and point out things wrong with the car and how much they should cost to repair... Tyres, worn shocks etc etc...

We looked at a Z3 at the weekend for me missus... Was up for £10,400 and she was happy to buy it pending inspection. Took it to me mate who's a BMW mechanic and he plugged the diagnostic tool on it - found a few faults which totalled about a grand! . We went back to the bloke and offered him £9k, he said fook off, £9700 is his lowest price, so we walked away! He calls back the next day saying he'd take 9k for it!!! We then told him to fook off!! She never did end up buying it!!!!

Nomads right, when we sell motors over £10k in cash, we have to notify the Inland Revenue because of money laundering laws now, they need full ID etc. Must admit it doesn't happen that often as most people would get a bank draft for that kind of price.

As for getting a discount off a dealer for cash, Firstly the trading standards will have my bollocks if they could prove the cash price was different from the screen price ....

Secondly, whoever said it's more expensive taking cash is right. It costs us 20p in every £100 to pay cash into the business account so on £10k its £20 [ok, we always pay it in to my dads private account then transfer it cos its free but you get my drift, resent the fookin charges ]

If we got finance for someone on the amount you're talking about, we're looking at a commission of at least £200 and ALOT more if you're a total scrote and can only get sub-prime

Point is, for that price, unless you're private, you would really put the buyer off paying by cash....
