I bought my kit in Jessops. I just tried to find a link on their site but cant find a camera only option. They're now offering bag and a 2gig card for £405
http://www.jessops.com/Store/s47201/0/Digital-SLRs/Canon/EOS-350D-(Black)-with-18-55mm-lens%2c-bag-and-2GB-card/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&comp=y

The camera alone was £349 with bag for free up until maybe today? I think the deal might end today actually so you better hunt down a Jessops store.

As for the lens i found it for £175 on www.warehouseexpress.com but was £182 delievered.

If you buy Digital SLR Photography magazine there is a Jessops ad saying they will price match any camera or lens in the magazine. Find an ad by "Mifsud's" and they do the lens for £149 and Jessop's match it

Ok, i finally bit the bullet today after much deliberation!

I've purchased the Nikon D50 with kit lens (18-55mm)

a 2gb sd card (sandisk extreme III)

and Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens

When all that arrives i'll pop into the local town to puchase a case that will hold the body and 2lenses, and maybe treat myself to a polarising filter.

I cant wait!!

Jessops had the 350D at £339 also instead of usual £349 but for the £349 you got a free £60 canon bag

DO NOT BUY COMPACT FLASH CARDS FROM JESSOPS!!!!!

They're rediculously over priced.

EG 8G instore was something like £375 I bought a 12G off the net for £129 from here. (ordered 4.10pm, delivered before I got home from work the next day at 2pm )

LOL./ No mate. I plan to do a Safari in Kenya later this year and do not wish to miss out on any amazing photographic opportunities.

What lens would you suggest for such a trip?
The 400mm F/2.8 is one kickass lens, but also an expensive one..
You already have a very nice lens in the 70-200 F/4, i would stick with it and maybe get the 2x converter on an aps-c sensor canon it will equal 640mm F/8 but as you are in Kenya light should be no problem and you can also upp the ISO if needed. But if you are keen on spending even more money and also get even more zoom there is always the 100-400mm L USM IS and a converter and here there is a possibility for equal 1280mm for a relatively fair price.
BUT we should not forget the 300mm F/4 L USM IS this is a very nice lens with excellent picturequality and with a converter also here we can have up to equal 960mm.

So the choice is up the wallet... but you allready have a very nice lens..don't forget that
Fully understand and thats what your saying, my worry is that the F4 200mm will be too short with the convertor on.. i have never been on safaria nd tahts why i asked Nomads advice as he has. I havent a clue how close you can get.

Thanks for all your help and advice to both myslef and others, you have been a real star mate.

Chop, your welcome.
In its absense i just bought a 4gb Sandisk extreme IV.

Did your new one turn up anyway?

You paid £400 for the 350D with standard kit lens and that's all? If you read above you'd see warehousexpress do them for £339

Jasesapphy
Yes that sounds like a good lens. Is it one specifically you have seen? Low F number is good.

Alex
The 350D and that 75-300 lens will be £500! NOT £600! Can't you read?

Stu
OF COURSE it came!

What ever you buy, make sure it is a propper dust sealed lens!
The desert sand gets everywhere.
I think most L lenses are dust sealed, bar the 100-400.

A guy I know goes on safari regularly, he recons 400mm is the minimum, but maximum aperture doesn't have to be really big, so the 70-200 + 2x converter would be fine (although i don't think the 70-200 F4 still has autofocus with the 2x???).

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately I am working (about 17 hours a day as well ) obviously if I wasn't working I wouldn't be on PF so much lol!

Ont he photography theme, I went for a swim earlier (we are 4 1/2 hours ahead of the UK here so it was dark) and though I would take a few pictures...

They jazzed it up with a rope light around the pool as some German minister guy was just about to have a pool party All those shots were taken at ISO 3200 with exposures of 1/4 to 1/2 a second Handheld without a tripod That took some steady hands and a lot of Photoshop to rescue It shows that you can just about use crazy high ISO speeds like 3200 on the 20D and still get half decent results (suitable for websites anyway)

Obviously a tripod and long exposure would make some much better pictures!

Ok guys, just had a read through this post. Some absolutly fantastic pictures. My question is though how are you getting the action shots and getting them without blurs. I find that My olympus SP-500 takes so long to actually take a picture its too late or the object just becomes blurry.
Any of you willing to give some tips??

You realy need a good digital slr camera for that. I tried panning shots with my Fuji 4800Z camera last year at TOTB and there was never a car in the shot, even tho I never took the car out of view.

With a digital SLR what you see is what you shoot and you can set shutter speeds (from about 30s to 1/4000th) ISO settings from 100- 1600/3200, aperture from say f1.8 (depends on the lens this one) to say f22
It's the level of control that let's you get the picture.

Stu,

Just to get you excited about your Safari... I went on a mini one today, Tigers are beautiful creatures

Sometimes they were so close to the car that 75mm was almost too much!

P.s. I have no idea how the colours/levels look on a normal screen - my Laptop is positively crap for looking at photos!

I work for an IT consultancy firm.

Your dad has basically the exact same kit as me, however my 28-80 (ish) lens is a Tamron rather than a Canon one like his (although I hardly use this lens anyway)
