Joking aside

Japanese Squires are better than the Mexican ones you buy now.

Look for a decent second hand one to learn on.

I must confess my first guitar was a Squier Bullet, which is a strat body with a telecaster neck, which I still have.

Then I've had a couple of Jap Strats, an American Telecaster, which I sold to my Dad to buy my bed when I bought my house.... not very rock and roll.

Got a Hofner Club 60 which is a lovely old thing.

And I bought a Gibson Explorer after seeing The Edge playing one on the Whistle Test in about 1979 and just loved the shape.

Now all I've got to do learn to play the things

Ironically, the Telecaster is probably worth 3 times what the old man paid for it.... but the bed has a better action...

Oh and Mike, the only way to learn to play is hours and hours of practice..

Unless you do a Robert Johnson and go down to the Crossroads and sell your soul to the Devil...

And when I say the Crossroads.. I dont mean the Ferrybridge Services where the A1 & M62 cross either....

Although I bet there are a few services for sale down there, just not the ability to play the geetar....

Having worked in a guitar shop, for starter guitars Strat Squires are fine. But also consider the Yamaha Pacifica (012 series). These are actually VERY nice guitars, and for the money, I would go as far to say they are better than the Strat Squiers They also do a very nice Tele copy in the Pacifica range (010 series IIRC?)

Mike,

Go to a guitar shop, explain to the long haired hippy type behind the counter who can play like Steve Vai but is usually too ugly, wierd and obnoxious to get in a band so he is relegated to intimidating beginners with his fast runs and fancy licks in the local music shop..... that you are looking for a guitar to learn on, then sit down and see what feels comfortable to sit with, remember you will be sitting with it for hours at a time, you dont want something thats constantly slipping off your knee or is unbalanced.

As Thrush said some of the yamaha stuff is superb quality and very good value.

Try and go when the shop is quiet too... last thing you want is 20 accomplished 'Axe Men' standing round sniggering as you fumble a few basic chords

Playing the guitar is a bit like driving, some people forget very quickly they were learners once....

Oh and dont rush into it, spend some time looking and getting a feel for different guitars.

Another top tip... dont buy a Flying V.... they are a bitch to play sitting down

Good points there Neil! All very true

I should point out aswell - there are two types of guitar players. The "Strat" player, and the "Les Paul" player....

Cos no matter how much you like the look of a guitar, it all boils down to how much you like how it FEELS.

This is about body type tho, not so much model specific. The reason Strats and LP's are used in reference, is thier body types. Strats have tapered edges, where you strumming arm lies across the body. LP's don't - they have right angle edges all round the body. This is the mian difference - so the "Strat" reference applies to all guitars that have tapered playing edges, and the "LP" reference applies to all right angle body edges...

Me personally, I am a "Strat" player - I just don't like playing Les Pauls! I just don't like how the body of the guitar cuts into my lower forarm when playing an LP - which is a shame as I LOVE their tone and sound!

Some are a mix of the two tho - typically Jacksons : these will be thinner like a strat body, but be right angle edges but sometimes with very minor tapers.....

It's all about trying as many as you can, and finding out what you like, and what you don't....

And as Neil said - Flying V's are for stage only!!! Utter bastid to play sitting down

Frankly, if you are new to the Guitar, I suggest that you keep your budget as low as possible.

If I am honest, you wont be in a position to know what you particularly like until you have honed your skills a little. Some people like the Strats (I always have - had several copies and now have a Fender Strat), but others will go for the Gibson route of style, etc etc.

My advice - go for the Squire - they are well built and cheap. For the budget you will prob get both a guitar and a practice amp. Make lots of noise, annoy your neighbours, but most of all have fun!

Dont buy a second hand guitar. Unless you know what you are buying (and no offence - you wont! I know a few guitar players that couldnt tell a good one from a dud!!!) you could spend money for no good reason.

When you have established that you are enjoying the instrument, and you are improving, then invest a little more time in it!

Dont want to sound negative, but I know a lot of guys who 'bent' their budget after pursuasive conversations with Guitar vendors only to have them sit in the corner of the room for the rest of their lives! (not directed at an yone on this board I should clarify

Cheers

JJ

My best advice would be to go to your local second hand guitar store. You'll get a better guitar for your £150 and the guys will be more helpful.

Squires are fine to learn on, I learned on a Squire, then bought a Gibson SG and a Les Paul Standard.

When you get competent then do yourself a favour and buy an SG... you'll never regret it!

I always thought an SG was a bit neck heavy and the Les Paul I tried was arse end heavy.

The Explorer is the one.... everyone knows that, perfect balance, lovely guitar to sit with, big lump of wood so a lovely tone and ressonance, a nice 'cheap' Gibson

Although if I ever get rich I'd love a Gibson 335 semi or a Gretch Chet Atkins.... or a White Falcon.... best stop now.. could be here all night.

Glad you got sorted Mike...

Its now just practice practice practice

Not all SGs are the same...

I looked a several before I found one that I liked... I have short fingers so I need a thin neck!

Neil - the Explorer is a fucking AWESOME guitar! Perfect looks, perfect balance (depends on what model/make it is tho, some are a tad arse heavy) and perfect tone (personally, I like the ESP/LTD Explorers, that they had to stop making cos Gibson sued them! Subsequently became known as the "lawsuit model" )

"Lawsuit" Model LTD by ESP (also known as the James Hetfield (Metallica) signature model)

Classic Gibson original model

My only gripe was the ESP never made any left-handed Explorer "Lawsuits" - if they had I would deffo have one!

Left-hooker Gibson Explorer's are hard as shit to find aswell
