Is it a mk4 or mk5?
105bhp mk4 must be the less powerful one, with the silver tdi badge, as you can get a 130 as well, with a red badge and i think one in the middle around 115bhp somewhere...possibly confusing this with passat but its the usual VAG engine mine field
Mk5 IIRC they do a 1.9 and 2.0TDI engine. looked at them myself but found them very very dull

Our family car is a 1998 Golf Tdi. Its the lowest power one which is probably the 105bhp as you quoted above.
They are PISH slow but thats not what its there for! Get approx 100 miles per £10 of diesel.
EXCELLENT build quality. We bought ours at 84k miles or summat and it felt WAY better than the 53 plate 206 we swapped it from. The doors close with a pleasing thud etc.
We had one problem which was the water pump dieing. Apparently its really common on Mk4 golf.

i take it you are talking about a mk5 golf as this is the only tdi they do with a 105bhp engine. the mk4 were either 90, 100, 110, 115, 130 or 150bhp. they are all fantastic and bombproof!

Ive got the GT TDI 115bhp, chipped up to around 130bhp (which is what later ones came with IIRC), even when i hammer mine round town and to work (2 miles away) i still get 35mpg, which is poor for a diesel, but out on long journeys i can see 57-60mpg easily, flies too!

As said wont be a GT as they were 115, 130 or 150 bhp. Being older one i would imagine its 90bhp or 115bhp. As said 90bhp wont be fast but have nice wad of torque for lasy driving.
Bullet proof if looked after.. make sure has FSH and whats mileage? as cambelts are not cheap to replace

Try a search mate as theres loads of threads about these cars as they're one of the best used cars out there.
i wasn't aware they made a mk5 105bhp model actually, that said i haven't a clue about mk5's mk3 & mk4's are more my thing!
they did a 110 gt tdi aswell, badging is a minefield, your best bet is to check the engine code then find out on the net what it is. 150 golfs have silver gti badge on the back, red di will be 115 or 130 red i will be a 110 and a all silver will be either a 90 or 100bhp.
GT badges were optional though on the 110, 115 & 130.
i think thats all correct!?

Have got a mk4 GT TDI 130 which has done 500 miles on one tank (@£43)
You can get these chipped up to @170. The downside is the suspension is a tad soft.
The 150 version has a larger turbo but suffers from pronounced turbo lag when compared to the 130 version.

Very good cars, not without problems, but thats like verything, if you find one and want a check on it PM me as i work for vw/audi
theres a few issues like window regs failing on the front, and rear washer pipes leaking, which fuck the book lock and rear wiper motor, but TBH i only ever see the ones that have gone wrong, id imgaine thteres just as many on the road that are fine

As for the electric windows problems, my mrs's golf had them too. Glass pane dropped inside the door at 60mph going down the A61 from Harrogate

I have a remapped (done by Stu) GT TDI 150 and it recorded 200+ hp and 315 ft·lb on PE rollers. Regardless of figures the car is very fast for example my mate in a Leon Cupra R with 225hp had a race on his hand last time we were out.
Currently I get around 460miles per tank before the light comes on and I get around 48ish mpg - mostly motorway miles. If driven carefully i'm sure it will do closer to 500.
