What track day Helmet to buy?
Guys.
I am wanting to buy a crash hat for use when driving round the Nurburgring. I have no idea whats good and whats not. I fancy a full face one for the best protection in the case of a decent crash. What are peoples thoughts? How much do u have to spend, who makes them and where do u buy them?
Cheers!

you can get a cheap helmet for 90 quid which will be type a approval which is ok for soem forms of motorsport and well specced for track daying
i personally have a snell SA 95 safety approved helmet (arai gpk3), which gets updaated every 5 years so shoudl be on 05 now, which is alot safer and better constructed than a type A approved helmet.
mine is safe enough to use in f1 and is really a single seater helmet! ( i used to race karts) so has a small aperture compared to say a bike hemlet or touring car type helmet.
a the end of the days, you pays ya money, the more ya spend the better and ssafer you shall get

mine was i think Ł400 + vat in 1999 so quite pricey
think the latest arai top of the range are liek 700 quid
i was given a helmet an arai gp3 (brand new) even older skool than mine from early 90 by a old le-mans racer robin donovan but it was too large for me so was sold on to pay for mine in 1999

Thanks for the advice guys. I suppose I dont want to spend more than Ł400 as I need so much money for other things at the mo. I will have a look at the links that people put up! Thanks
Pete McCrash - this will be my fourth trip to the ring. A crash helmet is a good idea if u have seen some of the crashes out there. I have started considering wearing a crash helmet on the public road when I go out for a fast run. At the end of the day its the same thing. I treat the public road like the nurburgring.
cheers

Dovyboy - not too sure if a crash hat is legal on the road. If I had a caterham or something like that I would 100% wear one regardless of the law. At the end of the day on the sort of run we are talking about, u dont want to be seen by the cops as it is

The cheap ones also tend to be heavy - Mine was just over Ł100 and when you compare it to a Ł400+ one a mate has for biking its shocking.
Still it builds the neck muscles for high G corners

Fair play Pon and BigP.
I will look into getting something thats pretty decent.
BigP - Hows it going mate? u need to get some proper brakes on that CSL of yours. Its not a medallion to be worn round the neck and shown off, its a proper car that needs proper driving
I see u on the bm3w site. I picked up my e46 m3 just a couple of weekends ago and am very chuffed with it. I just couldn't bring myself to owning a CSL due to the paddle shift. All that effort learning heeling n toeing, double de-clutching, rev matching down shifts etc, wasted due to some computer taking it over. It wasnt for me, so it had to be a normal one. Gotta say if I had PLENTY of cash, I would get a CSL and stick a 6 speed manual in it
cheers!

You're right about the brakes, shocking compared to my old 6pot AP's.
The SMG is pretty cool once you are used to it, and seeing as I never learnt to left foot brake or heel and toe, it suits me fine
Hopefully catch up on track or at the ring this year
