Default mechanics?PLEASE help,am really stuck here!

right now because of this

happening to my e36 325 beemer
ive been swapping the diff and drive shaft so i can get back on the road,so i started, and got the old diff out no probs

and the new diff is ready to go in

but.......the bloody driveshaft will NOT come out!
at first i tried wd40 and hammering,including a 4ft handled item! NOTHING!
then today god thought it would be funny if i had to do it in this!

so i left this

to go outside and work on it!!!
so i have this in front of me

and ive tried hammering it to death (note the mental peened end!! )
so i bought this

so i could screw it to the hub and force the driveshaft through,so less than 30 seconds of big wig loving later i had this!

DAMMIT!!!!!!
now im being told maybe a slide hammer?could someone suggest wether its a viable option for me to hire one for a week from hewdens (11 quid IIRC) or if theres any other way i should be going about this? and could someone show me exactly how a slide hammer works, best way to use it etc....i have a rough idea but never used one and cant find a decent description,PLEASE help me!

i'd say a slide hammer personally, same as used for removing half shafts from live axles. but then i'm certainly no mechanic.

get a bigger mallet lol

or, cant you fit one shaft into the diff and fit the diff like that??

on the shonky drift sierra you can undo the 4 bolts holding the hub to the swing arm, then the complete hub/shaft slides through the hole so can get diff in and out

would it not be alot less hassle buying a 2nd hand hub and binning the lot? it may cost you Ł50 or whatever but at this rate youre gonna do some damage to other components aswell, plus is it worth the hassle when you can just swap it and be done with it?

thats what id do

taken the fact im stuck in the middle of nowhere and it took for fucking ever to get the bits ive got without being fleeced stupid,id say no,as whenever the bits decide to arrive they will more than likely need new bolts,or grease,or something else that will delay it further!this thing is pissing me off!im gonna try the stove!

i've used a slide hammer before. it may have been made for the perticular job i used it for my the engineer at my work but it went like this:

a metal rod with a thread on one end.
a large round lump of metal with a hold in the middle of it just slightly bigger than the metal rod slid onto the rod.

and a stop of some sort on the other end of the rod.

then u screen the thread into what ever it is u need to remove. and just slide the lump of metal into the stop and hopefully it draws the material out of where it is.

may not need to screw it into the material. if u can secure it to it some how it should work.

but if u have used a big fuck off hammer already i cant see this doing much tbh.

also for future if u can get hold of a copper mallet it shouldnt damage the shaft. but i dunno if u can get a 4' version of a copper mallet

Smacking it with a sledgehammer will make no difference unless you wedge the hub against the ground in some way, as when you hit it, the whole beam etc will be moving on the bushes so you wont get it "shocked" off....

you just need a decent puller, not a slide hammer Imo, as you are trying to get the shaft back throught the hub, not the hub off the shaft?? is tht right??

alternatively try prising the cv joint away from the hub from behind with a chisel etc....

defo just a decent puller needed though...

Dunno if it will fit through now it has been mushroomed though...

Hire one... unfortunately, this is why garages charge a decent labour rate.... they have to buy expensive tools and equipment....

If you can get the whole arm / driveshaft off, stick it in the freezer for a couple of hours, then remove and pour hot water on JUST the outer edge of the hub and hit it before it all warms up.

If the arm won't come off or the freezer is too small, leave the car out in the current freezing weather all night and pour hot water on JUST the outer edge of the hub first thing in the morning and hit it.

.

The shafts are always mega tight, however with a decent drift and a hefty enough hammer you can bray them out. Takes some doing mind and if you not good with the weilding the old hammer you may never get it shocked loose.
Maybe the best thing would be to get somebody to hold the drift with a pair of grips so you not scared to break and hands thus giving you free reign to give it some good wallops.

In what way is the shaft fooked?

bent? inner cv joint fooked?

Slide hammer won't help at all, you need a big hammer and a suitable punch to hammer the shaft through the hub. You've tried leaving it soak in wd40 i guess?

the cv joint went and exploded the diff off the car as per first pic, drive shaft became detached and rear mount broke!,theres LOADS of wd40 in and around the shaft now.
