Anything above 13 volts (and below 14.5) at idle shows the alternator and loom both in good condition

I have to say, I remade the ends that connect to the positive terminal (all the little ones that bolt onto the whatsit) and gained an entire volt!!!!

Yup! Mine were in shocking condition, and so I just went through the little ones (4 in total IIRC). Made a huge diff - the lights on the dash were suddenly notably brighter!

snap! - 13.7 here to after the first rev.... before that it starts and shows 10volts. one (and only one) rev to 3k and it jumps up to a rock steady 13.7...

is that bad about the rev to kick start it? alternator on the way out maybe?

My boat used to do that! It is actually the thing on the back of the alternator (all part of it on a car) that tells the alternator when to start charging. If only one blip, not so bad, but may be worth checking the condition of the wiring (the little wire) to your alt. This can make a diff, and often comes adrift!

The alternator needs an RPM above normal idle for a fraction of a second
BEFORE it starts to charge. This is normal

Agreed, though 3000rpm is not a fraction above normal idle though

JjCoDeX75,

depends how slowly you rev it up

A blip at 3000 rpm will do the same job as a long blip at 1800 rpm.

But yes if it needs 3000rpm then its on the way to heaven...

Fair comment !

My boat was shite - it would have to be reved all the way up under load to 'encourage' the Alternator to charge, then it would usually shed a belt! Class! You have to love that sea water!

PMSL - I wonder sometimes - the Boat is about the same age, but I have just replaced the engine with a spanking new one - helps hugely on the ol reliability. It did have cosworth level reliability, which wasnt funny when five miles from the closest land!!!!!

My boat......

Every car that I have worked on has always shown between 13.7 and 14.4 volts at idle on the SECS monitor.

If you look carefully - you wil see the vents on the side at the rear . The three holes near the back
