Default 205 GTi vs 309 GTi

with every one banging on bout 205's, got me thinking

why does no one use the 309 GTi? where they any good?

what engine do they have in them?

would they make a good track car?

i used to have a 309 sri, was the 1.6 205 gti engine

the 309 gti uses the 1.9 gti engine and loads of people fit the rear beam etc fromt he 309 to the 205 as it increases track and is better.

but the 309 looks shit

i had mine a whole 2 months before some dopey bitch drove stright out in front of me at a roundabout and made the passenger side about a foot shorter...

my friend had a minty mint 309 gti, in red

it handled superbly and never let him down

just seen as the 'ugly brother' of the 205

personally i think it would make a good track car, and can be had cheaper than the 205.

its just finding a good one is a little hard these days

My first car was a 309 1.3 in white, lowered with a PECO, yes PECO DTM exhaust and gti wheels

It is the only car out of the 4 I have owned (Fiesta, Escort GTI and 88 MR2) that never let me down

the 309 GTI had the same engine as from the 1.9 GTI 205. So all the difference really was looks and weight??

As said above, I think it all came down to the looks of the 309, it was the uglier bigger sister of the 205.

i never had a good opinion of the peugeot's tbh great cars to drive and all but everything you touched in the interior broke! I remember pushing the fag lighter in on my mates 205 and pushed the fuker right through the back of the socket, all the plastic broke around it. And the switches jesus christ! and the sunroof always used to leak.

Great cars to drive tho

309's are too tall, too long and too heavy in comparison to a 205

Don't need an accident to do that - lean on it and it'll bend. It's French

they are good cars, if you can find a good one....Handle on the limit a bit better than the 205 due to the increased wheelbase, same motor as the 1.9 gti...just a tad more weight.....

They are like hens teeth now though unless you want a scrapper!

I had a 309 Gti for about 3 years - the one below in fact.

My friends had the 205 1.9s and I was thinking of getting one until my friend's 205 1.9 went in for some warranty work - they gave him a 309 GTi as a courtesy car and it did seem to be pretty good ...so much so I decided to get one and not bother with a 205.

They do weigh about 75kg more but I can honestly say I never got left behind or felt disadvantaged compared to the 205 - the back isn't as mobile as a 205 or GTE 16v but it feels more surefooted ( to me at least )

When my friend got a Clio Williams ( supposedly faster than a 205 1.9 ) to replace his 205 1.9 he was pretty disappointed in that i could still shadow him cross country so i would say they do handle pretty well - either that or I had one with a good engine! Never had any problems with it except the engine undertray fell off and the first winter I thought I'd blown the head gasket as the oil filler cap is on rubber piping which fills with oil vapour and condensation during winter!

Having said all that, as a fun hot hatch i preferred my GTE 16v Astra

If I remember correctly from the reviews of the time the 205 was alot more prone to lift off oversteer than the 309. if you were good and had the nuts to do it the 205 could be more rewarding but the 309 was alot more stable and didnt have the hair trigger rear end of the 205.

That's what they basically said - I do remember my one friend spinning his 205 a couple of times, backing off mid bend

A lot of people don't rate them much...........i think the quality of them varied a lot as commented on by the mags when they were new. The one I had, had been well looked after, was pretty quick and actually handled pretty well I thought. Like the 205 it could bite you if you backed off mid-bend. One of the few cars I think that were under-tyred ...well the UK ones at least - the Opel Kadett GSis and Champions got the wheel/tyre combo they should have had IMO

the oversteer in the 205 is evil, you have to be well quick with the old reactions to keep hold of her,but as long as you stay planted she comes back to you.the mi16 i had was a beast so quick and nimble it shamed many cars that were alot more expensive

Great fun cars - they did the 309 with the Mi-16 in as a proper model on the Continent - 309 GTi-16. We never got it officially over here, just like the 405 T16, although some of the Peugeot management had them
