Possibly, but people do still do it

and when you have an old house with it in every room and have to replace one ceiling, it would look stupid to have something different to the rest of the house, and im not replacing them all........

Buy some of the ready mixed stuff (artex make it).
Just give it a good mix.
Get a plasterers hawk or mortar board to help get it on the ceiling.
Spread out nice and even, then add pattern with special roller or textured comb.
Can be messy though.

Thanks Silver,

I already had a go but was not totally happy with the finish, mailny due to the fact the artex was slightly thicker in some areas than others and as such created larger stipples than the areas where it was thineer. And i only had a small hand texture brush as opposed to the 2 foot square one I remember the plasterer having.

I'll probably have another go at it.

Ive already got a big bag of Artex to mix up, but what advice can you give me with regards to the consistency???

Only used the ready mixed stuff im afraid.
I wouldn't mix it too thick though as it will crack, a thick creamy texture will do.
