Fao Guitarists
Hello there!
Iv always wanted to learn to play the ole gee-tar and I know someone selling this one:
Its a Fender Squire and comes with a Park/Marshall 40W amp. He's after £50 but it needs a new 6th string - What are your views on this guitar bearing in mind I know nothing about them so it doesnt have to be amazing, how much for a new string and also is it decent for the price?

Hi Mate. Squire Strats are great for learning on. I know lots of people who have started out with a Squire and went on to be quite famous and shit-hot guitar players. I bought a friend the same set up second-hand for £70 quid and i thought that was a bargain, so i would say go for it as that is a great price. A new string will be about a quid for a single string but bear in mind you could buy a complete new set of strings from about £4.50.

strings are pennies (well they used to be) and are something you will change fairly regularly anyway
just play every note on every string to make sure no frets buzz
and 40w will go suprisingly loud on full distortion/overdrive!!! providing you can manage an "E" powerchord, you'll have a smashing time!!!

Squier (not 'Squire' ) strats are great instruments to learn on, definitely. You can also choose an Ibanez RG or GIO, that will also do perfectly. Keep in mind that if you wish to play hard rock or metal, the Squier will not suit you very long, because of its single bobbins pickups. The overdriven sound will be VERY weak. You may better choose an Ibanez RG with humbuckers, you will as well lear on it, but keep it longer

Thanks for the info, just bagged it for £40 (for guitar and amp). I hear what your saying Petrucci but I guess it'll do until I get more confident in myself and spend more money on a better setup.

We had a couple of Mesa's in the music shop I worked in - I was very attached to a Rectifier (don't know which tho [think it was a retro something or other - deffo a valver] but it was a combo, not a seperate head and cab, although we did have a head there) and that was an animal, and had that big, fat Hetfield sound to it
We also had a Laney twin cab with head, and that we couldn't get to over 3 without it feeding back. We couple 4 leads together one day, so the guitarist could stand OUTSIDE the shop ( ) and truned it up to 8 - it began to feedback, and when he played the obligatory E power chord, my nuts began to hurt

Here is my head and cab (the same i have)
150 watts of pure Mesa power, and 14 valves
I know the combo you tried, it's the Combo Rectifier, and it's a 50 watts. But mesa watts have always been a LOT louder.... so imagine my 150 ones

And yes, Mesa watts have awlays been louder
That said, I recently went to his (the guitarist guy) new shop where Jim Marshall (yes, THE Jim Marshall) was there and his guys were doing an unveiling of the new Marshall range, including the JCM and new JTM gear, along with the Monder Vintage amps - sound VERY good indeed!!!! Always been partial to a JCM900 myself
