Speak to Jaycos mate, he was
You've got to consider your personal safety aswell mate, it's not just about how much you can earn!
My uncle was a doorman for years and is a 2nd Dan Blackbelt in Karate, and he still nearly got fuckin stabbed one night!

ive covered for my mate who runs a door when he's had lads call in sick, so im no fountain of knowledge, but from what i know, the exam isnt rocket science, you defo have to be 18, and the money is decent. but make sure you get on a door with good staff.

my uncle was years ago in newcastle, was a proper old school hard man that could handle anyone no matter how big. One night he "ejected" a couple of youthes from the club he worked at and then when he was finished his shift he was going back to his car and they jumped him with a few more of their mates and hospitalised him for a while! Dont think its all glamour and shagging young birds etc, there is a reason why doormen are needed in the first place and I wouldn't want to be volunterally in them situations.

Been offered the work on more than one occassion but have always turned it down,
I coundn't be arsed with dealing with drunk pricks and my motto is never do a job where you are surrounded by people having a good time, to me that makes work 100 times worse
Also i know plenty of geezers who have been shot, stabbed, bottled/glassed and all the rest of the violence that comes along with this job, thanks but no thanks,
I have a mate who is a trained body gaurd, he gets some top notch jobs and contracts but the training and required qualification differs to that of a bouncer/doorman

my advice to you is start of somewhere quiet. i worked on a holiday site like butlins for 8 months last year, doing doorwork and static/site security. (the site security was worse for agro than the doorwork )
theres a massive difference between some dickhead giving you lip or trying to 'start' in the street, and having to calm someone down in a club or pub, especially when its your job youre thinking about aswell as youre personal saftey. im glad i started off doing easier venues, its surpising how much you need to learn as far as judgement, reading peoples demeanor, talking to people, solving problems, keeping everyone happy and stopping problems before they start. even the very basic things seem awkward the first time.
i wouldnt want to go straight into a big city centre venue straight away. i start working in a club in weston called vision this weekend, 1200 capacity and theres normally 1 or 2 big scraps in there each night. after working in somewhere a little tamer for a while i know what im going into now though and feel ready for it.
get your training done asap and get in somewhere fairly sensible to begin with is my advice!!

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
I did a bit of door work in London when I was working as a security guard up there, I thought it was pretty much the same thing but at nights and more money, got my license, went in the deep end, scared the shit out of me the first few times. Got used to it, was pretty good at talking my way out of things and I can look after myself plus I worked with good staff.
You learn very quickly and you gotta be on the ball.
Gave it all up when a junkie pulled a needle on me, no money is worth getting stuck with that.
Cheers, Mike

some doormen are complete pricks aswell tho. And some seem to cause trouble on purpose see a few locals at the gym they love them selves, most are just overweight but look big in there uniform.

i had a fight with a cunt of a doorman once as i accidently dropped my pint and the glass smashed. The prick of a doorman who was shorter than me but wider as im a skinny cunt demanded I pick up the broken glass to which i promptly told him to fuck off as it was an accident.
He then decided to throw me about the place, over a table knocking over some fit bint and then out the door when we tussled for a bit until i got really pissed off and smacked the cunt straight in the eye - it had to be the sweetest left hook i have ever done as you could hear the fist land on his face and left a lovely big bruise
doormen are pussies

I have been working the doors since I was 17 and Im 23 now and still enjoy it even though I recently cut my shifts down to cover work to spend more time with the other half. I work in a garage during the week so its nice to have my weekends back. It can be hairy at times but as long as you work with a good team who you know you can rely on to look out for you then thats half the trouble sorted before it begins. I started in a quiet pub for 2 years and I thought I had experience, oh how I was wrong. I done a cover shift in a nightclub and realised I knew fook all, was great fun though and it certainly opened my eyes. After that I did a lot of nightclub work and loved it, every incident was a new experience and Im still learning now. Best bet is to get your badge and try and do maybe half a dozen cover shifts at a quiet pub then ask for a busy venue like a nightclub. The best way to learn is by getting stuck in there, as long as you have a good team you will learn quick. Like I say Im still learning new things now some 6 years later. Its a good job but dont forget the potential danger you put yourself in when you go to work.
Seeing as no one else has, Ill be the first to mention Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze, top film but glamourises the job "a little".
Good luck if you decide to do it mate. Put it this way if you dont like it you will ony have to do 3 shifts max and you will have made your money back that it cost to apply for your badge.
