It can be hairy at times but as long as you work with a good team who you know you can rely on to look out for you then thats half the trouble sorted before it begins. I started in a quiet pub for 2 years and I thought I had experience, oh how I was wrong. I done a cover shift in a nightclub and realised I knew fook all, was great fun though and it certainly opened my eyes. After that I did a lot of nightclub work and loved it, every incident was a new experience and Im still learning now. Best bet is to get your badge and try and do maybe half a dozen cover shifts at a quiet pub then ask for a busy venue like a nightclub. The best way to learn is by getting stuck in there, as long as you have a good team you will learn quick. Like I say Im still learning new things now some 6 years later. Its a good job but dont forget the potential danger you put yourself in when you go to work.
Seeing as no one else has, Ill be the first to mention Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze, top film but glamourises the job "a little".
Good luck if you decide to do it mate. Put it this way if you dont like it you will ony have to do 3 shifts max and you will have made your money back that it cost to apply for your badge.

It is about who you work with.....
I have been around clubs since i was 15 due to my dad running and owning nightclubs in bagshot and windsor.
I now work the door (past year) with my brother at pantiles, liquid basingstoke and a few pubs around ashford.
And its all about what door staff you work with........... i worked boxing day night and had No faith in the guys i was working with, they were to slow to react to the radio or just not backing you up when asking someone to leave
But new years eve i worked with my bro and a couple of good doorstaff and they were on the ball never leaving your side when a few fights kicked off, there is nothing worse than escorting someone out a long fire exit to find one of your colleagues has pissed of back into the club
Build up slowly to learn body language, how to negociate with people and get your cofidence up.
Just my 2 pennies worth
Nick

I have been doin Doorwork for about 3 years now and somethin you seriously need to think about and not jump into......cos you could have your life ended for Ł15ph wats the point????
you need to be able to handle a problem by talkin well before you start throwin fists and decent doorman will tell you this....size is not everything i have met CharlieLuciano and also AJ proper lads and got alot of time for them and wudnt pick a fight with either of them, but at the end of the day you have to have alot of confidence in your own ability and not think your the dogs dangles cos trust me as gooda fighter as you are there will ALWAYS be someone bigger and better than you.....
but your a young lad your 16 and i think it seems all good now but trust me when you have 4 guys backin you into a corner you soon shrink and think it aint worth it...luckly enough i only have a couple of scars for my work but thats cos i have ALWAYS worked at decent clubs and for decent security companies
thats my two bits worth lol

To all the doormen.
Its quite scary when your on the dancefloor then suddenly about 10 doormen swarm the dance floor!
I wouldn't really want to do your job but I appreciate you and knowing that you're always there
Do you have to wear protective stuff like knife or bullet proof vests?
Sorry if anythings spelt wrong...whisky!

Cracks me up so many people who have never done it have got this glamerous image of doormen tho, its a decent job that pays well and can make you a good living, but you dont suddenly become "the man" once you working the doors.
If you were a ugly billy no birds gimp before the job, you will be still, just one wearing a tuxedo

actually, my mates took care of the other bouncers, and this particular one got nicked as he legged to the back to grab a cosh, however by this time the old bill had turned up and seen him

Another advantage is you can run your own business at the same time...
Take the drugs off the people you search and then get one of your minions (sp?) to sell it back to them later in the night. Tidy!*
*btw, not implying this actually happens but its a good idea all the same!

I've worked the doors for 3 years in both Bristol and Leeds. It does have its perks.....i.e. good social life...free entry into clubs/bars...free drinks....the birds etc.....but you also have to deal with complete and utter idiots 95% of the time!

have u got a g/f? u won't have soon if u do the doors lol!
money ranges from 10-20 hr hour but considering the crappy hours u do, its not that good is it.
it can be a good laugh. u have to be good dealing with people without ure fists getting involved. does get quite hairy at time and if u do a runner and leave ure colleagues in the sh1t then thats ure time over.

i agree, the money isn't all that considering the risk/unsocial hours. But when there's no trouble, it's isn't exactly hard work just standing there perving on women listening to music.
i've got to fck/been out with a few very fit ladies through doorwork, doubt i'd have got near them otherwise lol.

does any of the doormen off here do any kind of self defence/martial arts on a regular basis?
my old boss and a fella i used to work with did a martial art called kenpo (sp?). my boss was a 2nd dan and FUCKING scary when he used it even just showing me a few techniques without trying it fucking hurt! tony the other fella just passed his brown belt and i was still like when he used a few techniques! wouldnt mind getting into it myself but struggle to get the motivation, plus the classes are all black belts onwards so i just know if get my head kicked in every session
im hardly a 'fighter' i grew up fighting alot on the estate i lived on as a kid but i wouldnt call myself 'hard'. not had a proper punch up in a few years. i know i can swing a good punch though and i can use force to restrain/floor/hurt people in different ways quite easily though. did a small amount of thai boxing a while back so got a few techneques from that, plus some kenpo from my boss and tony, would just like to have more confidence in myself i think though. what do you lot sugest?
