how are tower cranes erected?
was wondering, some of the ones i see are too big to lift up with a mobile crane etc.
do they make up the horizontal bit then put the sections in at the bottom?

Yes, the section just under the cab is a jacking section, extra bits are put in through it. Then the cab and jib jack up onto the extra section.

i did look onto working for a firm called city group lifting, the money tower crane erectors get is toilet
years ago when they was building the city group and hsbc building at canary wharf, i had to build scaffolds out from the the top of the building to the crane itself. that was a chuffing long way up
wouldnt fancy sitting in that little ox all day when they start moving in the wind
