ive now had 28 sierras 10 of which xr4x4s and i always go back from mondeos etc to them, well ive just bought this, the rare glsi 4x4,all xr4x4 running gear without the shity abs and loving it,at £260 with 5 months t+t a kenwood cd player, and near fsh,and not much rust,i dare anyone to say you can get a better car for the winter for that cash...lol..................although i did go to stratford upon avon for it so its more like £350..

Does it have the 2.9 engine? Or is it a 2.0 DOHC?

Either way, no ABS in a winter hack does sound like fun if you like skidding about the place!

2.9

I loved my Dads 2.9 4x4 Estate - went well IMHO, better than the 2.5 V6 Mondeo he replaced it with.

Sounded ace when he got a hole in the exhaust - would be worth getting a decent air filter or stainless zorst on there just for the sound they make!

i had one in 99,and i thought they were rare then, not many people know about them, everyone i spoke to kept telling me it was a 2.0,but to be honest the xr4x4 in any year is rare now,so the gls has got to be,only made on a g-reg...........

i went to scrappy other day and they only had 4 sierras in total, they used to have 30+ couple of years ago its all mondeos now,up here anyway there aint many sierras on the road atal..

to be honest im no planning on spending any cash on it,a service and new reg plates as mouldy, ive had one with 24v granada cosworth engine in it,and a 12v 2.9 twin turbo technics, that was a great car,the engine still lives on in my mates 1.8lx saph and that with nearly 200k,id like to find a mint xr4x4 2.9(classic shape 88-90) and put it away somewhere in storage

the twin cam a good engine for mpg that was it(tappy as hell when you start from cold even when new)

but you got the pinto 2.0 right up to g-reg until they changed to tc,great fun cars in the wet

my mate gets nearly all the decent sapph and sierra shells for the stock cars from all the scrappies about edinburgh.the last one he used could have been used as a concours shell,no rust whatsover
infact im sure he must have at least 4 decent shells stripped waiting to get smashed

I had a red one back in 97. It was a great car and I had a piper 285 cam in mine and the twin induction kit. I also fitted spax adjustable suspension and removed the 4x4 badge It used to upset quite a few unsuspecting cars around my way

that makes me laugh actually because mine had a tow bar. We used to use it to tow my mates old boat and it was so heavy! When he came to sell it the buyer came to view it at the river while we were out on it and when we had it loaded up on the trailer on the back of my car the buyer asked what it was like for towing. My mate pointed at my car and told him that my car was only a 1.6 and towed it fine

I used to buy and sell cars quite a lot a few years ago ( prob about 10-12 years ago ) and mainly dealt with Fords and XR4x4's were always good sellers as nobody could afford the insurance on a cossie !!

Best car i have ever owned was a red mk1 XR4x4, D84NTU was the number of it and was in mint condition and felt as fast as fook at the time and not many cars could look near it, remember a mate of mine having a Mazda 323 Turbo and him thinking this was the fastest car ever.... until i blew him away on a race through a twisty windy section of road through a forest

Them were the days and im always thinking that i would have another XR4x4 if the right one came along, seen a really nice blue one for sale a while ago in Aberdeen area, cossie interior and escos wheels and looked in mint condition as well, was big money though IIRC.

Sierras are definately getting rarer. I haven't seen another Sierra for over a week and the last one I saw was a 3dr cossie.

They ARE getting rarer!! Mines the TwinCam but its just not as beefy as some of the Zetec engines, but has more lovely low down torque.

I used to have a G plate 4x4 2.9 GLS identical to that. It was a great car. Dont think they are rare really. I usually pass one going to work in the mornings at barnton.

And then I bought it off you, and the exhaust promptly fell off

then I had a front propshaft failure at about 130mph coming down Golden Hill (the Malton Bypass part of the A64) at about 1am coming back from Scarborugh - oh the joy, it wiped out the sump and the gearbox and a nova that I overtook
