Default Question for the Welsh

I've often wondered when driving past.....there's a J30 M4 (Cardiff Gate), and a J32 M4 (Coryton), but where is/was J31?! Did they just decide one day to be different, let's skip a junction?

Always puzzled me!

Cheers

You sure it's the same in both directions?

There are junctions on the M1 in London where you can get on, but can't get off and vice versa. Same on the M20.

Sorry for the sensible answer when it's late and I'm drunk!

They usually skip junctions when they plan (at a later date) to stick a new housing estate or industrial estate in.Then when they think there will be a big demand they build the slip road.

usually they dont skip a number, just call the one added later "a" like J11a on the M5.

but maybe they did, bastard welsh devils

ACTUALLY, im more inclined to believe RobS's answer.

Heres another one...

There never seems to be coach "E" on Virgin Voyager trains, and HSTs, and i expect more, but i noticed on them...

Goes ABCDFG etc

Wassat about? Scared of the mild drug reference?

Sure thats where you turn off going to makro

Sure there is two chances to get down the same slip lane if that makes sence.

During the construction of the section around Cardiff in 1980, numbers were set aside for intermediate interchanges that were not built at the time. 33 had been set for the link road to the west (A4232), 32 for the A470, with 31 intended for the A469 to Caerphilly, and 30 for the great "Hook Road" - a plan which was later shelved. Junction 30 was later added to serve the link road in the east, which will eventually form a ring road from junctions 33 to 30, via Cardiff Bay. Number 31 remains unused as of 2006, and there are no immediate plans to build a junction with the A469.

I was told it was because when they tried to build the junction there were a number of fatalities among the workforce in 'freak accidents' and so they just moved onto the next one and it never got built...

Probably bullshit tho

it was on the plans when they first did the welsh M4 corridor, but they will never build it as thay made the mistake in newport having to many junctions, and people then use the motorway just to travel one junction slowing down the flow of al the other traffic
