Hi Spiky - Good choice IMHO! I have 2!
One is an 1.6 Gti based Mi16v - paid £2k which was way too much for it, although I've had my money's worth out of it!
The other is a 1.9 Gti that I'm converting to Mi16v, it cost me £250 as an MOT failure, the engine owes me another £150. Depending on the MOT work needed I reckon running on the road will see it costing no more than £750.
On ebay and autotrader I've seen LOADS of 1.9GTis varying from £300 to £1400 - as always buy the best you can afford!
My brother managed 40 MPG in his Mi16 205 going to the Ring at Easter, I did 37mpg on the way to Bedford RSOC day - so they are ACE on fuel.
Handle brilliantly, and parts are peanuts as there a lot of them in breakers and on EBay.
You'll love it!
If you want me to look at any this side of the Bridge let me know - I drive around Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and Avon areas every day so it would be no problem.

Hmmm, YES and NO to some of that!
£2k will be a MINT 1.9Gti
My Mi16 died at National Day (after I killed the Cossie!), but I knew I had low oil pressure and ragged it anyway, my fault more than the car.
My bro's Mi16 has done Bedford, Combe 3 or 4 times, The Ring twice and National Day, plus he uses it every day to do a 80 commute. Still running fine on the original engine.
Gti 6 engine is good - 169 bhp IIRC, but AFAIK Gti6 brakes DON'T fit under standard 15 inch SMR / Speedlines. I saw an ad for them on Ebay and the guy was selling as he didn't want 16 inch wheels. I have 206 Gti 180 brakes on mine- the same as 307 HDis - fit SO tight, but work FAULTLESSLY.

i may be incorrect on the brake front then, that cunt pee vee has gti brakes on his 205, must be the 180 206/307 ones then as there is a gnats cock between rim and calliper
i also heard that long left handers are what kills the mi engine?
i dunno, mine was was only a 1.6 lol so never really looked into swapping engines etc.
and si, cya tomoz, im off to bed!

The Gti 6 6speed box also fits onto 1.6 / 1.9 and Mi engines, but I believe you loose SOME right hand steering lock. IMHO the 1.6Gti gearbox is the best of the lot, tho some peeps mix and match the ratios.
307Hdi brakes - cheap enough new, but plenty from breakers, and should be cheap enough as they are "Nothing special" so to speak. Say you want GTi 6 brakes, think of a price and double it will be a breaker yard response!

Come and say hi if you're about - 12 onwards. Not really a free for all, but I'm sure a couple of others won't hurt! Or have fun at Donno, or have fun in London Pug hunting!

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Sorry if this is old ground - couldn't be arsed to read it all, all this is in my opinion of course from knowledge of Karls car from when he got it ans subsiquiently when TIff had it and also from lookin into buying one.
1.6 gti or mi16 cars converted from 1.6's- AVOID- majority of the running gear isn't compatable with the upgraded bits you can buy- such as 307 brakes and its a 1.6.
1.9gti personally I wouldn't pay more than 1k tops- with resonable history, exhaust, decent tyres, standard rims and evidnence of some engine work- paying more gets you a mint car yes - but do you want it because its a collectors piece?? I think not. When you consider the 1.9 Tim has cost him LESS than 1k with a cage!!
Mi16 cars- a mine field and a timebomb waiting to happen- the correct car should have the proper wiring and engine management (ie no dizzy) and be mounted at the correct angle- but what is the correct angle?
So many people do so many different things- from having a look previously sometimes I think its better to go with a 1.9 to be safe.
Price wise- 2k tops for a good solid car with a good engine converted properly- the power steering rack is a quick rack so make sure its still in there. 3k should see a car with cage/buckets/harnesses/brake conversion maybe in a nice colour and maybe with some other trick bits like a 309 rear end- 309 front wishebones and a solid mounted rear beam.
Personally - given the choice I'd have a 306 gti6- No problems with the oil issues, engine already has reasonable performance, handles like a dream, proper brakes already fitted, readily available and cheap enough if you look hard enough.
Failing that- 306 xsi 2.0 16v - mines ace- only down side compared to Gti is the brakes, 6gears and 50 less horses

We've had 6 between us, from 1.6s, to 1.9s, to an ex Louise Aitken Walker 205 rally car, very similar in spec to Tony's one above.
Depends how mint you want it. I've bought 3 sub £200 to break for spares because of hideous bodywork, and a couple of nice ones at £1200 ish.....
Funnily enough, I ran a 1.9 as a daily driver, and apart from service parts, MOT, an alternator, and tax, it didn't cost me anything else than the £150 I paid for it.
When it got broken into, I bent the door back with a block of wood and kept driving. It sold on Ebay last year for £250!

Spikey, look at these 106's and 205's (link from Rally used parts/cars).............mostly properly sorted cars,
not cheap but they have had LOTS of money spent on them:

To clarify the front brakes thing.....
306 gti-6 brakes DO fit straight under standard 15" wheels, as does the other popular conversion which is 307 hdi (same as 206 gti-180) front brakes.
They both use 283mm discs, however the gti-6 discs are 22mm thick whereas the 307/206 discs are 26mm.
The difference between the 2 calipers is that the gti-6 caliper has a 57mm piston and the 307/206 caliper a 54mm piston, and a standard 1.9 caliper is 48mm.
I chose to fit the 307/206 calipers for a couple of reasons - they are pretty cheap new, but also, they dont affect the feel of the pedal toooo much! When fitting the gti-6 brakes, you really should be thinking about changing to a larger master cylinder from specific 405 models as the pedal travel becomes a lot longer.... With the 307/206 brakes the pedal becomes slightly longer but still feels good to use and so doesnt require a master cylinder change!
Regarding engines, IMO if you find a decent car with the engine installed well and its been well looked after, then an Mi16 powered car is the way to go! They fast and fun, and pretty cheap to maintain. The 306gti-6 engine would be the one to have but i dont believe its anything like as easy to fit as the Mi engine!
Good choice of car Spiky

I bought my 1.9 Gti for just over 1k and its pretty much mint with full service history and receipts for over 3k on replacment parts.
I haven't quite finished it in time for today, but should be ready for the next one.......
Finished painting the cage yesturday

i'm sure i've read somewhere that there are two different types of 15"wheels
both look the same but are made by different companies and have different clearance inside the wheels
this might account for the opinion as to what brakes fit
then again i might be completely wrong

also consider a newer 106gti or saxo VTS, not the cult status of the 205 but still excellent handling and does that 3 wheel trick round corners too!
Pretty straight forward to to tweek it upto 150bhp and if u wanted to go serious there supercharger kits and turbos available to get upto 300bhp!
On the other hand, you could pick up a £100 citroen AX - 650kgs as standard and fit the 106gti engine in, very easy swap as its the based on the same TU block. Just with standard stuff your looking at 200bhp/tonne with that! Ive done about 5 of these conversions and have never had any reliability issues.

Not sure on your budget but if you can stretch to about 1500 - 2000 try looking for a ruff n ready 106 rallye (phase1). Amazing fun to drive and almost indestructable - i sold my minter about 2 years ago for £1750 and still, to this day wish i hadn't... and if you need it to be road legal its cheap tax as its a 1.3
