Default Tailpipe size and exhaust sound.

As per title. Makes bugger all odds what size the tailpipe is, surely?

Silencer size etc is what dictates sound isnt it, the tailpipe is just a cosmetic thing?

Just its always been one of them internet myths you hear, that a mongoose with a 3in tailpipe sounds different to one with a 4in one etc etc even though it has the same backbox barring the welded on tailpipe, but ive never checked.

So, its it bollocks, or what?

I've had 3" and 4" mongooses and scorpions on my RST's and the 4" pipes have been considerably louder each time...

I guess the only definative way would be to use one car and then swop the exhaust systems over and measure the sound

of course the tailpipe size makes a difference - just look at musical instruments in different sizes

i never believed it either untill 1 day at college when i was doing machineing i rolled a bit of steel to about 7"'s wide and put it over my mates exhaust. it was hanging about a foot out the back of his car and it made quite a difference to how it sounded. that was even with a load escaping where the 7" was quite a tight fit over his existing tail pipe
