How long do you have after your car has ran out of tax..
How long do you have after your car has ran out of tax before you get the fine?
I know it sounds stupid but my ghey boss paid me for a flat week this week and i went on a spending spree last week so I can't afford the bloody tax until friday (tax runs out thursday 30/11/06) This will be a day after, am I still alright to pop to the post office and get the tax disc? or is it ALL done online now? Or will I get charged a fine for not having it taxed or SORN?
Cheers.

Wrong.
You have 28 days from the end of your tax to sorn your vehicle so there is no way they can find you guilty (unless you are driving the car of course) because all you would have to say is you sent off a sorn document.

Taxing it the day after is OK though as Flip asked.

the day your tax is due, you ve either tax it or sorn it off road, you can do this in the post office or on computer useing your retaxing form and within two weekes you get a letter back from dvla, you dont get any time to mess around or you end up with a fine and theres nothing you can do about it

I taxed my wife’s car three weeks after the tax ran out, no fine. You have to back tax of course though. You think there big government computer is as efficient as there making out, just think of the CA system

You have 28 days for a sorn document to go through, this is why (as long as the car is OFF the road) you wont/cant get a fine.
Let me explain.........
IF the computer at the dvla issued immediate fines to everyone over by just one day they would be issuing fines too everyone really applying for sorn.
this would cause a backlog of work with crippling effects too the system as people write in and correctly argue the case and win.
Costing the dvla many hundreds of thousands.
This is why they dont issue tickets within 28 days.
Now, if you are caught driving it is an offence although after only a couple of days it is VERY ulikely you would get fined as you could explain this as forgetting and as long as you dont have a history of this it would be hard to convict in a court as long as reasonable doubt exists of you forgetting.
Yes, i know forgetting is no defence but i think you get my drift.

Never had a problem.... and as above you have 28 days as long as your not driving it on the road and if you were you could probably get away with a week out of date.

I dont want to get into another argument with you red, but seriosuly, this is the way it is.
You legally have 28 days to either sorn or tax a vehicle.
Of course legally you dont even have one day if your using it although in most cases you wouldnt get fined if it were an obvious mistake and within a very small time frame.

Well im gonna piss on all your bonfires
A fine is supposed to automatically be issued after 14 days if a car is not re-taxed or SORN´d. However, this meant they ended up firing out fines left right and centre and so I believe they have unofficially extended this period to 28 days until the thick people get to grips with the taxing system.
In answer to the original question tho, yes you can do it the day after, yes you can also do it at most main Post Offices.

TAX IT LATE
I regularly leave mine until the last day of the month in which it's due.
I t is as you know BACKDATED TO THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH IN WHICH YOU ASK FOR THE TAX TO START, so no way you are going to get fine or anything, unless you lie about sorn and still use it etc.
Never had a problem as the powers that be are not silly and will see what you do first, thye are WAITING FOR YOU TO LIE ABOUT USING CAR, and saying you're not.
Imagine if you taxed it after 15 days but a fine was sent out after 14 and got lost in post, who's fault is it ?, you have still paid for the whole month.
tabetha
ps been doing this at least five years, yet to hear anything

Do a vehicle enquiry, it shows tax or Sorn:
Vehicle status= SORN not due.
Date of liability= Date when Sorn will run out.
If its taxed it will say Licence not due and date it runs out.

I dont know the time involved, so cant comment on that.
But with regards to the logic that "none of us got fines so it must be ok"
I drive up the last bit of 30mph road to my house at 40mph+ normally as its a rural road with utterly no reason to be a 30mph limit, so i dont stick to it.
Ive never been fined for doing this, neither has ALL the other traffic that ive seen doing the same, but it does NOT mean that we cant be, we've just been lucky so far.
That was the logic of the argument that just cause a few of you have got away with it doesnt mean its ok to do it.

My mates phoned the DVLA regarding this and he was informed that nothing happens for two weeks. But I'm not inclined to belive the DVLA after all the bullshit they gave me when I was buying a shell.
As has been said above their phone system is shite you can never get to same person twice and you get a different answer every time.
