First one was done under warranty at 20,000 miles FOC, second one was done with the generation II head gasket by Martin Hadland at 80,000 miles for around £250 from memory, and the third one (are you feeling a pattern forming yet ) was just done a few weeks ago at 150,000 miles with the generation III multi-layer gasket was £300 but included a short service. Should be good for another 80,000 miles .

Bearing in mind the car lives on the limiter (the ONLY way to keep up with anything above 1.3 litres ). I can't believe it has survived the abuse it gets .

Diesel one? If so, yep rubbish . My Father has one, turbo replaced twice under warranty, gearbox replaced once, recalled once for another transmission related problem and wipers failed once. Is so bad that he has vowed NEVER to have one again . Except now the new one is out, he's thinking about trying the new diesel version - glutton for punishment .

No this is the 1.8 petrol.
The diesel ones seem rare as rocking horse poop and 2x the price of petrol.

Do the steel locating dowels improve the intervals?

They help with location of the head as you lower it down on to the gasket.

The plastic ones are useless, in every way.

Generally not thrashing them from cold helps the gasket survive... the cooling system is designed to heatup fast and that somtimes isnt so great!

Ain't that the truth!

There's a woman 4 doors up the road who had a 200vi and she drives off in the morning like she's on a qualifying lap......no letting her engine warm up gently .... and she wondered why she blows head gaskets...

Any coolant loss is critical very quickly on these as well - seeing as most people never check their levels from month to month it's no wonder so many get cooked

The radiators rot like Peugeots as well

Thats usually the final straw - particularrly as its the bottom of the rad thats most common to rot and its hard to see

As you can see I love these engines.... actually I do - they are very good, but you have to accept HGF. Its a bit like gearboxes on RSTs LOL

I thought Sean had patented that expression for BBQ assembly, he should sue Martoon for copyright infringement .
