Default Undeersteer & Oversteer

I was in me mates car going down a hill approching a right hander, it was wet and the car's tyres are down to the legal limit. We knew we were coming up a little too fast for the corner (about 20Mph) and were expecting a bit of undeersteer but nothing dangerous and nothing to hit.

We got a tadge of undeersteer, the front gripped then the back didn't and we started to go sideways momentarilly (lots of tread on the back). Not something either of us expected and I'm not sure why it happened

Maybe we hit a patch of diesel (petrol station right by the corner), but it was quite scary the way the tyres just lost grip instanteously. Any idea's on why this happened?

It was good fun and I wanted to do it again but me mates bird was screaming her head off

Yes..... In the right car fwd, if you gun it onto a round about turn till you get understeer then lift off you will get lift off oversteer. In the wet you can do this at 20mph no probs........

What car were you in?

How confident are you that the tyre preasures were/are correct?

Either tyre's incorrectly inflated runnig differing preassures and/or road conditions at this time of the year.

All guess work really.......

We were in a Mondeo, tyre pressures are correct but the back two tyres are different types.

Trail braking would do it as well.

I thought lift off oversteer was bad in a FWD car?

Only if it happens because of inexperience and you dont know what you're doing. Its great fun when you know its gonna happen and you're expecting it.

Had this happen on the snow.

I was used to FWD and didnt realise the 34/66 torque split would make it react like a RWD in some situations. Lesson learned but I alsmost shit myself at the time.

i reckon the diesel theory is the most workable in this situation

Lift off oversteer mate.....even more so in wet weather - I had it yesterday going round a roundabout going into my local Tescos @ about 15mph in my Bora but I kinda new it was going to happen as I provoked it a bit - slid round it sideways nicely & carried on into the entrance like nothing had happened...MINT!!!!

Lift off oversteer is superb fun in FWD

I used to have a riot until I cost myself over £400 for a set of tyres then the missus firmly banned me from doing it anymore

I had my 1st ever case of lift off oversteer a few weeks back. Happened in my Corolla Levin (FWD) but it was much better then you see 205 GTI's, no bodyroll at all.

My old man got it out of shape (trail braking/lift off oversteer collaboration) at over 100mph. I filled my kegs.

Sounds like your mate's a moron for knowing his tyres are on the legal limit and doing fuck all about it.

Just wait untill he kills someone because he can't avoid them fast enough, you won't be posting about it then will you?

Because I found a very large roundabout that I knew well with loads of run off and then proceeded to provoke lift off over steer everytime I went round it. After a few months of doing this on a dry road the tyres loked non too clever
