Default FWD Oversteer - Normal?

I'm a bit shocked by my car, it's bog standard and loves to oversteer. I'm not talking about lift off oversteer like with 205 GTI's either. If I fly into a corner, keeping the power on, the back end seems to break away. It's much worse than my 300bhp 200SX was, but once it's sideways, it feels much more stable.

I've got Toyo's on the front and Yokohama's on the back. Are Yokohama A539's just crap? Thinking about swapping them around.

Just wondering if any other fwd cars are like this? Does stiff suspension cause this?

I get very little understeer, 8/10 times, it's that back that goes 1st.

I was running with Parada's on the front and AVS SPorts on the rear and the back was a little lively

I had the same with my Calibra and Mondeo, both when shocks were worn.

Very stange sensation, had a few heart stoppers!

But, as a simple cheap fix (if it works) simply swap tyres end to end, and see if that improves the situation...

Hmm, shagged shocks, could be... I do have a slight rattle coming from the arse end over bumps, everything looked fine when I checked (all the bushes and the many thousand ball joints ).

Are there any ways to check the shocks? They don't sag or anything, it's absolutely rock solid, don't bounce when pushing down on the car.

I'll swap the fronts with the back and see how it goes then. If it is just the tyres, i'll put the Yoko's back on the back then, keep me on my toes. It's quite fun, the only problem is, i've been driving RWD and used to that.

I got the arse end out in the wet a few weeks back, steered into it and then backed off like I would in my old S13, it span. Got to get my head around the fact I need to floor it instead of back off.

I always thought Yokohama A539's were alright?

i used yoko a539s once, just at the begining of sep 2000 i had them put on.

wrote the cunting car off on the 20th

i purly belive that it was down to the tyres that caused me to stack it, not excess speed carried intot he corner lol.

well at least the back end stepped out and i didnt quite hit the celica dead head on, the impact was prety much on the drivers die front wheel...

bent me old mk4 escort in half tho

People slag 205 Gti's for lift off understeer.

I drove mine like an absolute c**t for 4 years and it never once stepped out on me.

I've had A359's. Wasnt impressed.

Wish they still made A520's

I found it my mates, you could nearly steer it on the thottle. Lift off the thottle back end comes round back on the power back end straightens up.

my old xr2 (the one in my siggy) ran fully adjustable coilovers (height and ride) and good year eagle Fs on the front, and Gmax none adjustable gas shocks on the back lowered spax springs and a combination of one dunlop and one continental (exact same tread pattern through) and that was unreal. it would do like youre saying, the front would grip no matter WHAT you did with it, but the back end would step out with no warning, no provoking, would be driving round a roundabout and end up sideways if it went from damp to standing water etc. fucking lethal. properly ruined the fun of driving that car, with more neutral handling itd have been much better

oversteer on a quick front wheel drive car is NOT what you want. on a slower one its not as bad, but theres a line, i recently shunted my corsa because the back end swang right out when i wernt expecting it, i over corrected, but couldnt drive out of the slide because i didnt have the power!

understeer is MUCH easier and safer to control i find, i was a fan of lift off oversteer, but having experienced it go wrong and be so bad it ruines the drive of a car, ive changed my mind.

get some decent tyres on the back mate!

its not understeer or oversteer that ruins the drive of a car, its front wheel drive that does that

For a few weeks i had Toyos on the front and Bauld Eco Friendly tyres on the back. (To see what it was like) That tried to kick out when parking in a bay at asda. Was good fun but kind of stupid so have new tyres now.

I've ran them as well on an Escort, grip was dismal!

Another thing that can cause FWD oversteer is the front geometry being out, I've had that before after whacking a kerb whilst playing in the snow..... Resulted in big slides when turning right!

I was paying attention to my mate that was behind me and couldn't see where he was. Didn't fancy hitting him so wanted to work out where he was. But yes I know I made a complete Horlicks of that turn.
