Default Traction/Stability control and snow

Right the stability control system in the BMW is amazing, the best system i have ever had in a car as no matter how much of an animal i am it will not step out etc just get where you point it

However if there was snow on the ground how would it work? As wouldnt it be gutting power, breaking the wheels allt he time, or not?

400lbft of torque is 400lbft of torque no matter what fuel you burn to generate it Phil.

APPROX FIGS:

231bhp 370lbft

0-60 is 6.5 seconds

Top speed limited to 155mph.

1/4miles is 14.5 @ 100mph

50 - 70 = 7.5seconds.

This is all as standard. Theres another 40bhp and 70lb of torque to be had from a chip, and it will still do 44mpg.

So going back to question do you turn it off when there is snow on the ground or leave it on?

you cant get it to step out with the TC etc on?! you clearly aint trying hard enough, i can even get the work 520 do get right out, 4wheel drift mostly, esp when 5 up, no amount of electrical trickery can defy the laws of physics!

I'd go for a leave it on.

I only have the asc option in my bus and not the full nads option (like i think you have fitted), and when i have driven in the snow it is faaaar better than I. I would like to say at this point that i am far better than the traction control system....yeah right....

Yhe full option - which it sounds like you have - is far cleverer than we think we are.

Whilst it might not feel like it is doing a better job, i am sure it is....leave the button well alone and let it do its thing...

Using weight shift and momentum (particularly if the cars fully loaded, 5up), youd never get it with the throttle or just from cornering fast, as it stops you doing anything but complete sillyness.
If the ASC and all that was perfect youd never be able to crash barring in a straight line, and surely you dont really believe that...

Its a pretty unintusive system, only times you can really feel anything too harsh is if you catch the TC unawares, the ASC itself is subtle, only know as your cornering far faster than you should, and wen u do go way past the limit, its doesnt get twitchy as it doin its damdest to help you out.

Youd never get too much out of it, as it works well (and you cant FULLY turn it off it seems, even when "off", ie hold the button in for 5secs or whatever), but making out its totally impossible to do anything but grip with TC+ASC on in any car is daft really.

I guess you didnt mean "Right out" as in massive oversteer, which is how it reads.

I could get my old mans old 5 series to step out quite a bit with the DSC on in the wet! And that had 265 rears It does feel funny when the brakes start grabbing to get it straight again!

I found it quite slow to react and the power cut was very very annoying, you would be going round a corner and if the road was slightly bumpy the skipping would set the traction control off crazy and you lose all power. Although this was a company car and so no representative of how you would drive your own car (Rhys has been in it )

Stu: I didn't think the Dervs had the 155 limiter? Well, not in the old shape cars anyway?

P.S. Rhys, the manual for my Audi says to leave it on in all but heavy snow, but then I have 4wd, LSDs and 255/40/17s front and back

When I drove the 5 series in snow I had it turned off as RWD with no LSD and wide tyres made it pretty slidey and so the DSC just killed the power lots.

rhys, you will need to switch it off when/if the snow gets really bad other wise the DSC will just cut the power almost completly and your wheels will just turn at a seriously slow rate regardless of throttle position

oh, and thats properly off too, i.e. pressing the DSC button for 20secs as opposed to just a quick press

Phil yeah it was so funny in your old mans company car. What was the average speed to TOTB agian?

Rob yeah know you had to hold it down to get thew two lights on to completly turn it off

Stu mine does not have the 5th limiter as book speed is "only" 145mph i think std.

Tis a LOT better than other TC/ASC systems on other cars ive tried, not too OTT.

Like said, push it in a normal manor, esp with power, and youve no chance at all, its very safe.

But with pure momentum, you can have suprising fun, but only at big speeds, as the TC/ASC cant defeat the laws of physics, but it helps you handle the fun moments without it twitching all over the shop trying to recover it.

BUT then again, if you want fun like that, you really dont want them aids at all!

the TC on the M3 has saved me ENOUGH times! its scary!

On the odd occasion I turn it off... its usually to access the 6th speed setting on the smg.. which requires sport mode on and TC off......

fook me.. i switch it straight back on!

Stu, out of curiosity, what ECU upgrades have you done for the E46 m3?

Dont you find it intrusive at all dave?

Its pretty good, but ive driven a E46 M3 at Rockingham and the instructors wouldnt let us turn the TC off and it was fucking me right off, getting right in the way of the fun, esp accelerating out of corners.

oh yeah, for sure Steve, its annoying as when you are in a pretty straight line, and plant it... the TC saps ALL the power... you go nowhere then it resets and you're off...

But then again.. Ive tried the same, with it turned off.. and shit myself at how EASY the back end slid out changing from 2nd to 3rd!
