We do something similar here. Flights out of London are a lot cheaper than out of Australia.
As a result we always book a 12 month open ended out of London and return the next year (except this time as we are sick of flying back now ) We have been doing this for 5 years.
You will lose a leg though as you would book a return from USA to USA so you would initially be a leg down but other than that, thats what we have always done.
Nice plot by the way
**Edit - Other thing to check is what details the airlines require. We have only ever booked through the airline, never once through travel agents. Go to which ever airline you want to fly and check the details. If you havent already, start establishing a credit history and without being funny, put a mail box on the land so you have postal address, it helps a lot (and befriend the neighbours).
Also, how did you come to by the land, can you give any details like company etc as it sounds interesting.

Rich, I am sooooooooooo fucking jealous!!! That place looks stunning, and just the sort of area I would love to live in!!!!
Fuck having a holiday home - get you and the family some citizenship and go live there
And that land/location for $20k? House for $70k? Holy crap, look what you have for $90k - which is £47,379 GPB!!! What you conna get for £47k over here? Won't even get a trailer park trash mobile home for that!

Richie,
I made a few travel arrangements on Expedia and also Travelocity.UK. Using November as your travel time, airfares are below is what I got. I'm sure you already know this but if you don't, the day of the week and how far ahead you book your flight also affects the cost.
Sorry I tried the link and it doesn't work Essentially traveling on a weekday the price ranges from around 314GBP to 500+GBP per person (adult) and 281GBP to 461GBP per child using ages 7 & 13.
Wes
BTW the property is really nice, congrats

Nice piece of land, I myself would probably end up hanging myself living there I have too much city living in me to go somewhere like that. I'd be bored out of my mind.. then again, I don't do anything except for go to work and then come home and on here LOL.
