I've used and installed the Mandrake 9 Linux version on a old computer of mine, in terms of value for money it's brilliant. It cost Ł30 and that includes an Office Package with all the same standard stuff as MS Office, MP3 player, Graphics packages, web browsers and various skins and stuff.

I think it's potential long term is massive, but there is a negative side to using it though:-

-Bugs - to be fair for Ł30 quid what do you expect, but like the Office package for example messed pictures up in a document and occasionally messes the formatiing up.
-Compatibility - Some bits of hardware work and some dont. The bits that don't you can usually find a patch or drivers but it can be a stuggle.
- Software compatibility - Games for example, dont think all games come out for it, I know Unreal 2004 has, but I dont think Doom 3 has yet, and even then you have to find the graphics drivers for your car which isn't always easy...
-Bit of a Nerdy OS- You'll notice this if you stick it on, some things are like a 100 times harder to do or install that traditional MS software, involving all sorts of stange Dos Shell commands. But then if you just use your comp for the Internet chances are it will do everything you want it to do!! Some things plainly are not as simply as MS OS, i'm not sure if it is because it is acutally more difficult or if your like me and grown up from Dos and Win3.1 thats kinda second nature and Linux is a big change. I also have a CD-writer software package that makes Nero look like play school in comparison to how hard and unnecerally difficult this thing is to use
Hardware compatibility- Some new/ old peices of h/w won't have any drivers as yet.

Overall I like it and it is well worth a look, I would probably just stick it on a spare machine to begin with just incase your data gets lost or corupted. Or alternatively but a second new hard disk and set that up as the master leaving all your original stuff in tack on the your second drive..
