Default 20 degrees of advance at idle on an RS Turbo ?

Had a few little jobs done on the missus's Series II today and I asked the mechanic doing the work to check the timing.

He put a timing light on it and it showed 20 degrees of advance at idle which seemed odd.

So checked the dizzy and the mark on the dizzy casing matched up with the mark on the head and the cam timing was correct.

What could be causing this ?

A faulty sensor ?

OR

Is this a fault with the ECU ?

Did you have the vacuum hose disconnected when doing the reading? Also revs under 800rpm?

AFAIK theres no senors that can adjust the timing, the same as the ecu cant adjust the timing.

The timing is only adjustable via the dizzy, and off the top of my head it should be 12 degrees (check that its been a while and i prob wrong ) at idle with the vac hose off and at 820rpm

I've run mine upto 22 degrees in the past. It depends on the chip, and it's advance chacteristics. If it's not detting, then it's fine.

Yeah, the timing should be 12 degrees which is why we were surprised to see it at 20.

Thinking about it the revs were probably higher than 800, probably closer 1000

Didnt see him take a tube off.

If the ECU doesnt control the ignition what does it do ?

I thought the ECU can retard the ignition?
