Default Why was Paul Ripleys Fiesta so quick?

Why was it so successful putting down the times? The spec wasn't insane if i recall so was it suspension set up? Tyre choice? Driver skill? Luck? Iam sure he will come on here himself, just wondering what other people thought as the times were insane in comparison to cars that had 'more' power.
Iam building my zetec turbo so would like to know what kind of times i should expect roughly speaking?

He had a quaife gear set, which was optimised for close gearing and not top speed iirc. The question you ask is a very good one and begs to be asked of the ERST's as well.

An example was Steve RW's old car which was mainly home built and set up by AVA to 195@wheels and pulled 150mph at brunters, yet as you say these monster cars get nowhere close to the times or speeds.

As the current owner of said car H702 DEG, IMHO the main reason the car was/is so quick is because of the suspension and tyre set up.

I have said this time and time again when this topic arises, All RST's whether they be ERST or FRST's are never set up properly for launching. They are mainly set up to look the part ie lowered all round. Take a look at the March 2005 edition of PF, the Daddy Thrash. Look at the stance of all the cars present and you will see what I mean.

H702 the only one set up with the arse up in the air and the front down low. The tyres were road legal Yoko Advans run at 12-14psi and the front arms are Fiesta Frenzy rose jointed with the tracking set straight. The suspension itself was nothing special. It had g-max shocks all round.

The car is currently nearing the end of a full rebuild so will be fighting the RST corner again soon. Take a look at the resto thread on Fiestaturbo.com

As Paul said, didn't have a Quaife gearset thou despite what its feature said. It was a standard BC5 box with a Quaife ATB diff.

I had the car only set up for launching and the handling was err....

The prob is IMO that people don't dedicate there RST's enough to the sprints and just expect a big BHP engine to just 'perform'

Love that pic Paul

The handling was atrocious in anything but a straight line. Even then it could be dodgy. When doing a top speed run at Brunters the front's were still at 14psi, I hit a line in the surface and the car swerved about 30 foot to one side. I was doing over 140 at the time

People never believe me when I say once those tyres where hot it was quite hard to actually get the wheels to wheel spin and torque steer was non existent, but Like Paul said over 100mph was very hairy now you can understand why top speed's where never attempted by me as It felt like a ditch finder

he also had a very secret mod done to the car

just before each run he took his wallet out of his pocket and handed it over to a mate,,,,,,,,, just that weight saving doubled his bhp/per ton

others have tried this too and found it worked well

with miker for his top speed run they just played vilage people music in the cafe at brunters and he was off in the car and fooked off quick smart

its amazing what some people can achive when put in some situations

I have noticed this with my car. I bought it with ROCK hard rear suspension, with its arse in the air, and traction is better than other XR2 Turbos ive driven, but it still a handful.

Think i will be aiming at sprints too so going to look into sorting out my suspension set up properly whne the car is mapped

It's all about weight and setup.. 250bhp in a dialled-in car is quicker than 450bhp in some show car..

Ahmed also told me that the boost was mapped to come in progressively with the revs, hence why it always found traction as well....
