Default Freshening up an engine.

Right, got this V8 apart and on a stand, gonna give it a quick freshen up as it seems fine, nothing fucked.

Bores look good.
Pistons look fine.
Bearing look ok but ill change the bigends anyhow.
Heads looks ok.
Gaskets were fine but im changine em and the bolts, obv.
Ill change piston rings too I spose.

Is there any other checks I can or need to do to the heads or bottomend?

Also, whats best thing for cleaning/polishing combustion chambers and pistons with? They are sooty as fuck at mo.

change the rings and glaze bust the bores...

do check how much new pistons and a rebore is - you might be pleasently surprised!

Clean the heads up with a brass wire brush and brake cleaner

Whole rebuild kits for these cost next to nothing TBH mate, well, plus shipping.

But I dunno, wanna keep this at a silly low budget to learn how it goes and what brakes when it tastes a bit of boost

Is there any way of checking condition of piston rings? Ie what they look like when a bit worn? Can you tell?

Bearings are easy, but rings?

yes you can measure them with feeler guages

you need to comapire it to a new piston ring to acess if its ring wear or the ring lands themselves!

lol no not really

a leak down test would have been more useful.

You can still measure the ring gaps and look at what they should be on a new ring/piston and make a judgement based on that.

New rings are easy to come buy and fairly cheap.
