Default cossie gearbox options

i've got a dilemma i hop you can help me with....

my std 4x4 box has had a small wine in it or a couple of years now, its low got quite loud and does sould like its gonna fail quite soon,

what would the best bet be..

1) a genuine ford exchange box for 600 quid? at least it'd have warranty...

2) a running complete second hand box for 350 - no warranty and may go bang the very next day...

3) have mine rebuilt - gearboxman has quoted me 200 plus vat for labout plus any parts plus shipping which i thik is fair - BUT he is booked up for the next 3 weeks or so....

4) any other oprion..?

what would be the most cost effective - im not after the cheapest option, but dont want to throw good money at old shite and then be in the same boat in a couple of weeks time

Polished and peened Gearbox man one.... or get a Proper second hand Quaife for around £2k. Personally I think keeping replacing standard boxes is good money after bad!!!!

and it must be far nicer to drive around without constantly worrying about breaking a box if you use your cars performance!

Surely the warrenty on the Exchange Ford box is worthless at anything more than standard power?!?!?!?!?

I know someone who managed a warranty claim on a 400bhp+ car, but its still a lot of hassle keep taking the box in and out every 6 months!

I would look fora secondhand quaiffe like porkie suggests or dig even deeper and get a fixit kit off mike

anything else is going to end up keep breaking if you run much power and drive it hard.

£ 600.00 (ish), using your existing average/good condition box.

Default Gearbox

I have had similar problems with my car with regards to gearboxes, 3rd started to crunch so i bought a box from ford around £500, it lasted 5k and just over 12 months before 3rd gear destroyed itself, no warranty so my mate at ford sorted me right out and i bought another box got it for £396, currently in the car but i'm scared to stand on the power incase it does it again, don't drve the car like an animal that's the truth, from what i understand options are quite minimal, shot peen, gear kit, or the quaife which is mega pound notes, new 4k without transfer box 7k with, i have seen 2nd hand quaife's going for 2-2.5k but personally if i'm gonna spend that much i'd rather put the rest to it and get a new one (warranty)

Motorsport parts mate. Your prices are also a bit low as well I think. the £4k ish just gets you the Gearset as I remember. You need all the other normal ford parts, plus the casing and you need it built.... PLUS its always worth getting it peened and polished. It ALL adds up, trust me! I've broken two of them!

Thats why the second hand one that Dave has/had was a bargain!

bought a ford one
they said they wouldn't warranty it
didn't warranty it, wankers didn't warranty anything i bought that fcuked up from uxbridge

done the rebuild thing too
cheap fix but always waiting for the box to go bang, and still no warranty, even after 26 miles or hsould that be

went quaife and then found out i'd ned casings and the rest of it so more

still, there are always other options but with that sort of power you are always going ot break standard stuff, no matter how much you pay for it

im sticking at 330ish max, and im not an animal on clutches or boxes, never do launches etc,

this one went bang not long aftre i got it but was rebuilt under warranty with the car - they said they rebuilt the whole box - but i think they just did the bit that was broken and this is now just sign of age....

any other gearbox rebuild places???

cheaper than a quaife though and suposed to be stronger

proberbly works out aroun 3300 fitted

but as you have got pete doughty to sort it i dont think you should have problems as ive heard he was good aswell

my last car was 330 and i used to go through a box every month but i did abuse it

im going stage 3 at the end of the month if all goes well using an alcon paddle clutch and hudraulic conversion on std box to see if that makes any difference but i will treat it nice this time

The Fix-It kit is closer to the £3K price now as its a complete kit inc 1st gear etc rebuild fitting and shot pene polish is about £800-900 from Bernie?

I hope this PDE box lives up to expectations <real tears
