Default A Levels + general advice needed

right here goes...

im 20, left school after my first year of 6th form, so i have AS levels, but no A levels.

Now im regretting it, and want to get my A levels and maybe go to uni... i have at GCSE A,B,B,B,C,C,C,C,D,D,F , AS level (where i started to skive school etc) i have C, D, U, U, so i am pretty capable of getting the grades, as all the above was with NO work done on my part, no revision etc...

BUT, i am working full time, only £5 p/h, and still live at home, and every penny i have is gone on my car/other vital things, so i cant really stop work. Cutting down my hours is a possibility, as i work for my dad, and he'd love it if i went and got my a levels, and would probably pay me the same wage for less hours...

my girlfriend whom ive lived at my mums house with for 3 years wants to move out/have babies etc (the latter i dont want yet), and its putting pressure on me...

i have also been thinking of joining the Police (i smoke too much cannabis though, but thats for another night ), or the Fire Service (do they drug test?)

Its getting to the stage where i am hating my life atm, my job is shit, im always skint, my girlfriend is always moaning, my old school mates are loving it at uni

what should i do?

Andre

When did you turn 20? When you're 21 you get more leniency regarding points entry from unis as you're classed mature. What you have already might be enough for certain courses at some universities anyway. If you're going to do it then just go to uni and do a course you like and will get on with, don't bother finishing the A levels, especially as you want to crack on in employment. 3 years will be bad enough.

Might as well do it now whilst you're young instead of getting more pissed off down the line. IMO a child should not be brought into the world unless you are stable yourself and can provide well. Don't get too attached to the mrs and her requests, it may not last forever and you will meet loads of women at uni. (sorry to be harsh) Get applying, doesn't hurt to do that at least.

Personally I wouldn't bother.... the amount of people I know that I used to go to school with that are in debt because they went to uni is unbelievable .... wouldn't be so bad if they actually ended up in a decent profession, something along the lines of what they actually studied for ... most of them are doing jobs that they could have done without any qualifications.

I guess you need to decide if you really think further qualifications will really make your employment prospects any better?

If I were you I would start looking for another job, I know it's a family thing but £5 per hour is peanuts.

It's completely dependant on what you want to do at the end of it all.

Just because your not happy working where you are doesn't mean you have to go to uni to do a levels to be happy. Think of the job you want to do and do whats needed for it.

I'm also 20, never went to do A/AS levels or anything as i wanted to be a spray painter. I started work a month after leaving school and never looked back. I love it, most of my friends that went to college/uni have either left or are fed up with it. And whats more, they can't get the jobs they want or have studied for.

i know loads of people who go to collage/uni then end up with either good jobs they could have got without a degree/a levels, or a crappy job that they hate, that still didnt need the degree. i think nowadays the companies care about the person not the qualifications, and most will just run a trial period in contract where you can be let go at any time, to ensure you can do the job. a degree in financial planning does not show you can SELL a mortgage or a loan to someone, all it shows is that you could bore the tits off joe bloggs who wants to get on with his life.

my bro is going to work at the royal bank of scotland, and he is going straight from school. its got excellent career prospects, is not extremely hard work, regular hours, and if you do well very good pay with excellent bonuses. the minimum he will get is £180 a week AFTER tax, not a bad wage at 16, and thats before any bonuses, profit shares and investment opportunities.
Then there my cousin, who is going to do exactly the same job, but he is 21, just out of Uni with a degree ( in god knows what) and is starting in the same position on the same wage, so where has this degree got him, apart from in major debt?

all you need to get a good job is to show enthusiasm, punctuality, and be friendly with everyone you meet. not much to it to be honest

EDIT: Oh and my bro got the job without even knowing his GCSE results, we get them on the 24th August! so they dont really matter either

Depends what YOU want to do in life.

I left school after nearly a year of AS Levels when i got glandular fever, ended up doing all kinds of work to pay the bills at first but settled down doing mortgage work.

After a few months though i knew my heart wasn't in it and that i wanted to work in motorsport so started saving some money and about a year later managed to find out about the National College for Motorsport, went down, had an interview and assessment - got accepted.

Did 1 year there and applied for apprenticeships with F1 and WRC teams, ended up starting an apprenticeship with Honda Racing F1 Team last September.

Not bad to say i've only got 9 GCSEs under my belt

Follow your heart mate, a few years invested at this point will pay off massively later in life

I gotta say Im in uni, but I also work for tesco 3 nights a week, the possibilities are endless and as for the people who dont get a job at the end of their uni, well usually, not always but thats due to the fact they dont try hard enough for what they want or uni put them off. I want to be in motorsport and when I have finished my degree I will go on to do my masters to make sure I can do that, but if all fails then Tesco will do alsorts for me when I get my degree and will probably fast track up the ladder, as once you get past manager the pay is pretty good, saying that I make 500+ a month takehome which aint bad for a student.

at the end of the day like the other guys have said it really comes down to what you wanna do, but the possibilities are endless.
