Default CPU temp

In a "ideal" world, what temp shud the cpu run at ???

Mine was running at about 77ish degree's earlier, and a few mates warned me it was running WAY to hot, but as its always run at this temp and the pc's is working fine i have ignored it.

Gave it a good clean out earlier, and its running at about 64 degree's now.

Is this ok or is it still running to hot ????

Been told it need's to be in the 40's ideally

Help pls

Mines 54degC (XP3200) with an Aero7 fan.

My mates downstairs is one of the new dual core Athlon 64s, and his temp is sat at minus 9!!! . He's got a vapochill cooling case though (its like a freezer, sounds like one too so quiet, just a little hum!)

The evaporator temp is -54 it says

Top stuff those Vapour Cycle cooling things, will get one myself when I change to dual core later this year

p4's always run hotter than AMD's.

Your mates are right though, your is running abit hot, but as its a p4 64degrees isnt as bad, but still on the warm side do you play games on it? if so then temps must go through the roof? have you got at least 2 fans in the case?

I got an AMD athlon 64 x2 4200 last week, that runs at a healthy 39-40 degrees when doing general surfing, listening to music, msn etc, then when i play games it rises slightly but not much

Well if you have a 6 year old pc then dont worry as that probably produces less heat than a calculator!

Newer higher speced pc's generate alot of heat and need cooling via fans and other means, if the temps too high it can ruin the whole computer basically!

Depends how old your pc is? if its more than 3 years old you might not be able to get temps readings because the motherboard in your pc wont have temp sensors.

Anyway if it has, then use this http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/

XP2600+ with a cheapo heatsink & fan running at 39 degrees C with a game running, motherboard sitting comfortably at 20 degrees C, graphics card processor running at 47 degrees with Arctic Cooling custom cooling-kit on...

Can't complain, and I've not even looked into Vapo/water cooling yet!

77 degrees is a bit on the hot side, for any CPU, though......not dangerously so, by quite a bit, but it is pushing it a little higher than comfortable.

I might be talking out my arse here but I understood from a test once done that running a P4 cpu too cold (outside its normal operating temps) that it actualy reduces the performance of the chip?

The advantage of getting the temperatures down that low are only that you can overclock the chip and therefore the temps increase back to normal operating temps and the byproduct is extra cpu speed without reducing the life of the chip?

I have noticed my P4 seems to slow up when the fans are run flatout and the CPU temps start below 15-20ºc (unclocked), but reduce the fan speed and watch the cpu temps come up to 40ºc (unclocked) and the cpu seems to speed up again. Maybe thats just me seeing something thats not there.
