MOT's with engine swops... this cant be right, can it?
The Ka had its MOT this morning, and the log book says the 1600 Escort Turbo lump thats in the Car.
The bloke in the testing station would not put the car through the emissions test based on the engine, but based it on the car instead... so it went on a 2002 1.3 instead of a 1989 1.6 rs - not a chance!!
Spoke to a friend who works in another garage and he asked the MOT boys there to check, and it should have gone on the engine, not the car, and they have it in writing. How can places be doing MOT's wrong these days!

car
all you need is a letter off an engineer (engineer report)saying its obvoiusly been fitted right and that its an earlier engine in the car and they have got to test it on the engine´s year not car!

.its up to the garage [although they do still have to do a full check which takes an hour]

As far as im aware, they should apply the rules to either the year of the car or the year of the engine depending on which are the most leniant.
So if its a 1920's car with a 1990 engine it should be 1920's rules and if its a 1990's car with a 1920's engine it should be 1920's rules as well.

a mate had his mk6 escort tested the other week which has a erst lump in and all the tester did, iirc put the reg in and POSSIBLY the chassis number into some dvla database and it came back as it needed a "non-cat" test. because he has informed the dvla properly about the swop

Apparently its section 7.3 of the MOT manual that says about cars with different engines. The example it gives is if a 1995 car is fitted with a 1991 engine, the emissions test should be for 1991. Same as if a 1991 car is fitted with a 1995 engine, it still goes on 1991... so which ever is oldest like many of you have said.
If they kick up a fuss, i need to ask for a VT17 form which is an MOT apeal form to get them in trouble with the ministry, and if they tell me they dont have any... thats bull as well as they only need to print them off the computer.
Gonna go down there in the morning and ah....... pop a cap in their ass

Team HOTHOT!
the official line from an MOT tester is that when a modified vehicle (ie, different engine) then the testing for emissions will be based on whichever is older - If the car is from 2001 and the engine from 1991, then the emission test is for that of a 1991 vehicle. If the engine is from 2000 and the car from 1991, then the test for emissions goes on the age of the car.
In a nutshell, whichever is oldest is used for basing the emissions test on
