You sure that 'Cheap' is the main factor?

I can supply Ross Racing pistons, but from past experience the supply can be a little slow and they are around Ł550 as far as I remember.

Mahle are cast. You can't get Cosworth racing ones anymore.

Accralite's or Ross.

Mahle's are what RST's come with as standard and Accralite are Forged aftermarket items. My Mahles performed well with 28psi, 300bhp and 160+mph. That was with the tops machined to lower the compression ratio, which should weaken the pistons.

Accralites have a bit of a reputation IMO.

Std Mahles aint all that after set amount of boost. They will crack between the ring/s.

Some Mahles are cast then machined so not 100% forged.

There are loads of options which dont cost anywhere near Ł600 and steel rods to suit only cost Ł150

Regards

Steel Rods are around Ł150 EACH. Burtons (the same people that tried to tell me that 5000rpm on a 1600cvh was over-revving it. ) will tell you that standard Mahles are fooked beyond 1 bar of boost, but mine had all manner of shit thrown at them and lived. I replaced them to upgrade, but because they gave up.

1.5mm oversize is common for forged pistons. And i've never seen a block crack because of it.

MK - what happened to your other engine? Didnt it get good power on the RR?

yes mate it made great figures

296.4bhp & 349lb/ft

but.......................

i left swarf/metal filings in the intercooler after chopping & moving the pipes around

which in turn got sucked into the engine, fucking it totally
snapped valve
fooked head
damaged bores/pistons

so i learnt the hard way that an airline will not blow out all the shit that gets in there

so having a new engine built now
