but google is HUGE.
theres not a lot u cant do on it.

search the internet
get directions
zoom in on area 51
compare product prices in all different shops
search for pictures
get the news
set alerts
block pop ups using its tool bar.

people know, love and trust google. and if anyone can test ebay i'd say its google.
if they make the site well (which they have with most things they have made) it may well take off.

i dont know if it will be as big as ebay, but give it a year or two and i bet it'll be not far off

If it gets enough money put behind advertising it then there is no reason it wont end up the same size as ebay.

To do that though, they have to spend enough cash to make it a household name.

The problem they have is people use phrases like "ebay it" when talking about selling stuff on the internet, seems unlikely in a couple of years that part of our langauge will have changed to "ebay or g-buy it"

as chip said its going to be alot of advertising to make it as big, ive just joined the marketing departmen in my work an some of the prices for adverts are crazy, but wont be a splash in the water for goole really,

could be a good place for bargains when it start out witch is alway good.

It's not going to replace ebay. The service they are going to offer is going to compete with paypal not ebay. Ebay owns paypal. They may eventually try to go against ebay. But not to start with.

That was my thinking, if anyone can compete it will be google as they are a forward thinking company with a massive following, they was on the ball with world cup live updates before most thought of it etc
my homepage will always be google as u can literally go anywhere from there!

and i agree with Chip, its going to be a massive up hill struggle even to get around the current lingo,

its like the whole hoover (vacum cleaner) and selotape(sticky tape) that sticks in our heads!

whateva happens tho surely the only winner is us the consumers!

If the audience was as big and the fee's where cheaper then deffo. Ebay/paypal charges are far too much IMO but without competition they can charge what they like, so I'd welcome a alternative

There is something else that NO ONE has mentioned yet that might be important.

Do a search on google (for pretty much anything) and it returns "buy so and so now on ebay" in the results.

IF (and its a big IF) they decide to stop presenting ebay options (and i suspect they get huge payments for doing so) and they present g-buy on it instead, thats going to be a MASSIVE amount of "free" advertising for them.

I know hardly anyone who doesnt use google, so if on google you constantly get another auction site rammed down your throat instead of ebay, it could make a big difference.

Depends on whats on it mate, and how well coded it is.

Ive never heard of it till now, so i dont know anything about it yet.

Personally though i EXPECT i will use it if its from google, because (as mentioned above) they get things right when it comes to just about anything they do on the net.

yahoo and google are essentailly the same thing anyway.

i still use yahoo personally, but i view that as one and the same as using google

in fact i use phrases (god im a nerd, lol) like "give it a google" when someone asks me a question, even though to do a search i actually type "www.yahoo.co.uk"

Again, like "whack it on ebay" its a case of "give it a google" is in our language now.

I heard rumours that google were going to make an offer for eBay and all associated companies

Havent heard anymore about it but if they did then google would have the whole lot covered and very little competition

Thats my point tho, topic was about google bringing out same thing as ebay etc and would they compete...and thats why i mentioned their search engine...because its the same as the others and yet, they compete very well if not better now...so anything is possible

Google and yahoo are actaully powered by the same back end technology as far is i know, ie one is just essentially a different "front end" on the other more or less.

I think it will catch on if they offer better rates to advertise items and to transfer money, which they no doubt will

Google is on the world domination path folks, they have some very clever ideas and have beaten others on their own turf time and time again.

I reckon they'll be the next microsoft in a lot of respects.

Did you know that many top company executives have joined google with a $0 salary. Ok, most have personal fortunes, but google have attracted some of the world's top brains in exchange for no cash (well, I am sure there's long term gain there).

Did you know that google employees get one day a week to develop their own ideas, this is the kind of creativity fostering that's brought google maps, google desktop, picasa, etc... (see here for google's list of "products" http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/options/).

Paypal and eBay are forces to reckon with, we probably can't think of how they can be replaced/improved greatly. All I say, is watch out, google's about

Would be good to get a new approach to buying things on the net. I hate paypal almost as much as I hate ebay. Too expensive and annoying.
