Rick,
I got 5000 and then re-did the sum in my head quite a few times........and I kept getting 5000
But it is a very clever question, as somewhere in the calculation process the brain takes a "shortcut" and trips up to give you the (wrong) answer as 5000..............I think most peeps trip up where I put the bold print.
Third Question:

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20.
Now add another 1000 (HERE - your brain says the total so far is 4990)
Now add 10. What is the total?
Scroll down for answer.....

The correct answer is actually 4100.

Doug Stirling
I added the 40 and 30 and 20 and 10 to get 100, then counted 4 1000's = 4100. When i do mental arithmetic, or any to be honest, i always work with the like terms, group them, then add to the other group terms.
