Most turbocharged Beetles are still on carbs... I know they're not production cars, but you might be to get some information from them. John Maher Racing has done it before, I'm sure.

What about a set of really big carbs, like Dell'orto 48's or something? Would 2 of them and a custom plenum be up to the job?

a few people have turbo'd twin carbs, i.e 45-48's, although i think you need special turbo specific ones, but im not totally sure/ Seen it done on a few mk1 escorts though

normal twin 48's are good for 240+, so blown ones will be easily adequate (sp)

Even though those are big, if you use N/A carbs on blown engines the fuel ratio becomes lean on boost...

cheers eveyone.

the problem with twin 45 etc ect, is the time for jetting, the maintenance to keep them running sweet.
also i think twin 40's would be well up for the airflow.

Anyone got links to above info?

Hi,
so wot power is a single SU good for? Why are you running 2?
About 260/270 for a single carb with the right jets and needle, twins obviously mean I can add more fuel/air in the future and maintain an equal length inlet track to all cylinders, less chance of the outer 2 cylinders running leaner, downside is keeping them in balnace

I need to get the car on a decent rolling road as it pegged the 200bhp rolling road it went on

The Maestro did a 13s 1/4 with big traction problems (spun for the first 1/8) so hopefully some new adjustable tca's should help resolve this as I can reduce the camber

Cheers lads.

Ratty,
can the fueling be fine tune'd to say 11.5 - 12.0:1 AFR thro out revs whilist on full boost?

Any problems with them?
as i have a mate who hate's them, a mate that love's them, and i spoke to a local RR tuner, who didn't like them either.

What are they like for leaks under 25psi boost??

Tuning carbs is always a compromise its not like having injection and a proper fueling map, but to control on boost fueling use a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. I've heard of people running 2 bar through SU's but unless its been rebuilt with new seals dont even try it

Only issues I have with mine is cold start due to 2 independant manual choke cables, but as its left ticking over until I'm off choke before driving off I dont worry

Setting up is an art (same with injection) and getting someone who knows and can size the correct jets needles etc is the key

Biggest problem with carbs in general is people never service them and expect a 20yr old carb to perform like new

Also make sure you get a proper turbo carb, plenty of n/a ones passed off as sealed turbo units

Standard R5 carb has alot of potential, but with alot of boost. Highest power car at the mo is circa 300bhp, and puts down a 11.4 quarter at 122 with the standard carb in situ..

Other options, if you search the states, are Weber IDA40 converted to blow through setup. Basically they upgrade all the seals and spindle ends, and fill the float chamber to stop it from crushing..

The other option is a usual off the shelf carb, and incase it in a presurised box (so equal pressure on the inside and out side of the carb, so no fuel will leak past the spindle seals - as used in the old Bentley Turbos)

Cheers Ratty and Dave,

i did think about enclosing the whole lot, but decided not to, as alot of work, also the work needed to seal the throttle cable, wires and coolant hoses, and make the a set up, where the carb can still be serviced with out to much hassle.
