What GFX card? (games)
ok guess i better upgrade my wanky geforce FX 5200 coz i wanna play doom3
want something with LOADSA memory (256+mb) n does all the difficult stuff with ease (ie antianalysing, bumpmaps, alpha blending etc. etc. also would like it to do 8+ passes per frame minimum. basically one that'll run doom3 well (bearing in mind doom3 shades each individual pixel in each frame, so eats GFX cards for breakfast

If you want to run doom 3 and all the other games that will be using the doom 3 engine, then you got to go the Nvidia route at the moment as all the ATi cards are having quite bad performance and display problems with Doom 3...

okies...
anyone know what the main differences are between the 5700 5800 5900m etc. etc.
also i assume the leap from 256mb from 128mb will be noticeable, especially in a gme like doom3?
im shocked at how pricey these fookers are tho!

i could pop up totenham court road i spose... thing is that you seem to see things just as cheap on places like scan.co.uk and ebuyer.co.uk so seems like a pointless journey...
the 5950U does look "the bollox" but i think itll be overkill, as im only running an athlon 2400+ so i assume the CPU will become a bottleneck way before the 5950 even has a chance to get into its stride
altho if i do upgrade, i diont wanna buy something shite... as ill only wanna change it again soon after

Ive been looking to upgrade aswell but I came to the conclusion that I wouldnt upgrade at present... waiting a few weeks and doing motherboard and gfx
Couple of things to bear in mind.
1. the very impressive Nvidia Doom3 bench marks were based on there PCiexpress cards which arent even on the shelves yet I currently have an ATI 9800 pro and can run Doom 3 perfectly at 1024 x 768 medium settings which is probably the max for your current proccesor anyway.
2. 16 x PCIexpress is away to hit, the bulk of future motherboards wont have AGP so if you spend £300 - £400 on an top end AGP card it may not be any use when you upgrade your PC next.

Just to clarify the benchmarks Im talking about were taken from Nvidia's 6800 PCi Express which is due to hit shelves soon, some lower level PCi Express cards are already available. The 6800 is what Im wanting

My advise upgrade to something like a 9800 pro for £100ish then plan on a Motherboard / CPU / Gfx upgrade in the future rather than wasting loads of money now only to wish you had waited 3 - 6 months for better stuff. Thats what Im doing which is rare for me..............

Currently the Nvidia 6800 has the best performance although Ati just released better OpenGL drivers which give the X800 a 10% boost in Doom3.
But Doom3 is the only thing 6800 is good at - X800 is better for everything else.
What sort of display problems are you talking about?
With my X800 I can run Doom3 @1600x1200 2xAA 2xAF quite smoothly and without display problems.
ps. X800 Pro VIVOs are actually X800XT PEs. All they have done is disable four pipes and lower the clocks with a bios mod. So if you want a cheap XT PE just buy a Pro VIVO and flash it with the XT PE bios.
Some of the Pros even have XT stickers on the heatsink.

you want the 6600 (not out quite yet) There are some other cards but I can't say as they are under NDA. But I can tell you about this one as the Inquirer has details of it.
It's an affordable version of the 6800.
256Mb also means jack. For Marketing ONLY.

Check out Rage 3d's Forums.
The worst problem is performance though as ATi's OpenGL Driver is poor as they don't update it as no-one (apart from ID) use it, ATi is at the moment working on a brand new driver update though the beta version of 4.9 is out unless you underclock your card quite a few people (me included) are getting white spots on the screen....

jon, with the memory surely if youve got 256mb rather than 128mb then you can hold twice the texture or lighting information...
surely this can only be a good thing, especially in doom3 with the per-pixel shading? woulda thpught that in a game ike that that having the extra memory would mean you could move up a resolution over the smaller memoried versions
bear in mind tho the last time i knew feck all about graphics cards was when the geforce1 came out and replaced the TNT2 Ultra my did i wish i had that card over my 3dfx banshee

No 256mb does not make a card fast, there is clock speeds of the ram and graphoc prosessing unit to take into account. My copy of doom 3 is gonna be here shortly so im gonna try and run it on:
p4 2.8ghx
512mb ddr400
128mb geforce 4 4800 ti
will be interesting to see how it goes.

how much?
and will that card be good for doom3?
re: speed im not on about clock speed, but ofcourse in my eyes more memory can only be a good thing (providing the game uses it all) and i know doom3 will use at least 512mb if you let it... and recomends high detail only be used on 256+mb card

It's the speed of the memory that counts not the amount, loads of cheap gfx cards manufactures try to con people into thinking their cards are faster cos they have more memory.
I assume Doom 3 is Direct-X 9? I haven't tried the game yet so can't say if it runs ok, will have to get back to you.

yeah its DX9
the tech it uses is really cutting edge stuff too...
the game itself looks like pre-rendered FMV! there are no precompiled light sources, each one is rendered add-hoc which as you can imagine really slows the game down! does make it look excelent tho... PROPER dynamic lighting!

Just Barton 2500 and 1GB of Kingston Hyper-X, nothing special.
The gfx card aint for sale cos I've only recently made it silent with a Zalman heatsink, I'm sure you can get 5900LX's for about a ton tho, the cool thing is the Nvidia drivers come with their own overclocking tool which is automatic, you just got to unlock it in the registry,

sorry chris i misinterpreted what you said re the card
a ton sounds about right for what i want
i'm only on a 2400+ with 512mb and dont really fancy upgrading just yet (as ill have to do the lot, chip, mobo, n memory )
the next thing i might consider upgrading is the memory, to maybe a gig of ram but get some decent speed stuff, so itll still be ok if i change the chip/mobo...
anyone know if you can overclock the 2400+ by much easily? my mobo is a bit shit tho so dunno if itll do it... oh and my cooling setup is WANK

Jim, just 'aquired' a copy of Doom III... well it actually fell into my lap literally LOL
On my machine I can run it at 1280x1024 which is the maximum my TFT will do. It runs perfect most of the time but pauses as you enter rooms and sometimes during certain effects. Going to try it at 1024x768 later to see how it runs.

Ati have released beta drivers just for doom 3
my radeon x800 xt came in the post this morning i have my pc here in work with me as im working till 9pm tonight and it rocks
i have upgraded from a 9800 pro 128
my 128mb 9800 pro beat my mates 256mb version on 3d mark
look on toms between these 2 cards theres hardly anything in it
for £150 get the 9800 pro
if u have the cash get the radeon XT
half life 2 is out in a month
this is when Ati will rule the roost
i left nvidia when i bought a fx5800 ultra and it was a sack of shite the 9800 pro was much better
Ati all the way
with there new drivers doom 3 is not a problem mine runes smoother than your pre pubescent ass

MWF, have a search on some doom forums, there are things you can do to speed up load times the EASIEST one is simply to unpack the .pk4 files by hand, then it doesnt have to decompress them everytime you open a door etc... but there are simple console tweaks that will speed it up without doing this

aye... resolution is a killer in doom3
gone are the days where a game would run almost aswell in 1600x1280 as it would in 320x200 (im thinking quake2)
