best oil for running in a cossie?
im sure its been asked before but i cant find a decent result in the search so
what do you guys use?
i was under the impression that a cheap crappy motor factors oil would be best?
cheaper the better because it doesnt have any addatives in it?
and that proper running in oil isnt worth the bother?
what do you recon?
also how long are tappets noisy for when you start a freshly built engine for the 1st time?
cheers

I take it that your puting thins in a newly built engine??
If so i would just use normall motor factor oil (mineral oil). BUt only run that for the first 250-500 miles and change that afew time. Then flush that out and put a cheapish semi-sythetic oil in it, and run it for 1000-1500 more on that stuff changing afew times. Then flush that and run on ford oil as the put in the engine as standard.
That is what i did with my Group A engine in my nova. There are lots of diffrerent ways and oils to use when running a engine in. Im sure others will add different ways to this thread.

You only need to run an engine in for around 300miles..the bearings are run in after about 25miles...its the rings that take the extra. Why people do 1000 to 2000miles is beyond me ..I personally do 500miles running in on cheap mineral oil then onto fully synthetic

Markk when i say cheapest crapest i mean a halfords own or a motorfactors own...there is no such thing as a crap oil IMO they all work for a while...in comparison to mobil 1 motorsport though they are crap and you wouldnt want to thrash your new 10k engine on anything less!

Halford 15w 50 mineral oil (red bottle) for the first 300 miles, drive it hard but don't let it labour or get too hot (or that oil will cook itself) then change to silkolene, job done.
Running in is best done by giving it full throttle then coasting down and repeating rather than cruising.
