HDTV and Codec Question
Does anybody know which codec you need to play HDTV encoded files and where to get it from please?
I downloaded an HDTV file to try on my Plasma and was going to play it through the PC on to it as an expirement, but at the moment I can't get it to play. I have installed a big codec pack which apparently has "every codec you ever need" in it, obviously not, I should write in and complain

Are you sure you need a different codec? What file format is it? Did not realise HDTV had its own file encoding format?
I play HDTV (originally recorded from HDTV) file fine through my laptop.

Hmmmmmmmm, well.... I only downloaded one file to try it out, I might give another file a go. It's an episode of 24 and it is 350mb in size so it has to be pretty good. It's: 24.S05E19.HDTV.XviD-LOL
Thanks Gareth, fingers crossed lol

Also Tony, that rip of 24 isn't actually in HD, it is just a normal DivX recorded from HDTV in the US and encoded at normal TV resolution. Downloading the latest DivX drivers should play the file you have, it is not encoded in any special way. The Higher Definition rips are called 24.S05E19.HR.HDTV.XviD-LOL (from memory, but i'm not going to double check while at work! They definitely have HR in the title) and are about 700Mb per episode. There are also raw high def versions floating around at about 3gig per episode!

Thanks for the help guys.
I got another file, and tried it, it played and is as good as DVD quality, but I'm not sure if it is true HD, still looked good though. I'm using a DVI output from my graphics card into the DVI input on the screen so it should be good quality. I'll do a search for "HR" and see what it brings up.
I still do not think it is worth all the extra money for HDTV from Sky yet as you only get a handful of channels and it is an extra Ł10 per month, plus Ł300 for a new box, I guess I will wait for that.
Jim - Luckily I don't watch 24 I only downloaded it as a tester, otherwise I would have to destroy you for spoiling the ending lol.
