DTA tuning dials for use doing a live map?

Anyone on here actually used tuning dials on a DTA p8 pro for live mapping on the road?
Personally i cant get on with the damn things and ended up just manually editing the map instead, you cant seem to lock it on a cell and edit it, so unless you happen to be in a set of circumstances where it loiters around in a cell for ages anyway (ie uphill in high gear or something) there doesnt really seem to be enough time to input using the dials.
Whats other peoples experience of using them?
I can see them being useful on a dyno where you can hold a car on a site, but to me they just dont seem useful in the real world?

i wouldn't know about that, i didn't try using them
i think that once you get used to them, they're probably quite a quick way of tuning individual sites. that's how it seemed to me anyway.

But the problem is that if you are going up through the rev range, you start to dial in the % adjustment that you want, and by the time you have hit the enter button its on another site.
Well thats how it seemed to me, but i had no instructions with them so maybe i was doing something wrong :S
On a dyno, im sure they are awesome

The livemap display screen is pretty good too, its just annoying that you cant edit the values directly on that screen and have to keep coming out and then going back into the main fuel table to alter them, just making the boxes on the live display screen editable would make a big difference IMHO, or at least allowing you to have both the fuel map and live display open at once to easily move between them (like emerald)

No worries Jay, i actualy quite enjoy mapping anyway, its nice that you can spend a couple of hours and then at the end of it the car run SO much better, gives a good sense of achievement.
Fook trying to drive it and map it like you had been doing previously though, its DEFINATELY a two man job IMHO!

I think i will just stick to the manaul editing of the map, i always prefer it TBH, i just would sooner see the actual raw numbers and edit them rather than mess around with dials and trendy stuff like that.

go thru it onc, see how much you think you need, then go thru it again etc.
its how i did mine on the live adjustments screen. altho that was easier coz it was all motorway.
chip, i need to get mine looked at again tho, the old map we loaded on the other day was the one i loaded up before i left the ring for home. the cruise stuff's not too bad but its still got those random rich and lean points dotted in it![Sad](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
i've emailed emerald for a new date for mapping tho

its true tho i think even on the dyno when the car comes on boost it moves to quick through the sites so switching between the real time and fuel map is the way i recon

Thats what i do anyway, i just got jay to drive for a few seconds, i noted what cells i wanted to change and by how much, then i edited anything between 2-10 of them in one go based on what ive seen and then got him to give it another squirt, FAR easier than messing around trying to get onto the same site on the livemap screen again IMHO
With regards to your car, i dont mind meeting up and mapping it again mate, was good fun last time anyway, and TBH with a decent amount of battery life i know i could get some of it better than it was as i was rushing through it trying to get it all just about ok before your laptop went flat, rather than taking the time to get things just right, plus we were very limited in terms of how you drove it due to being part of a 80-100mph convey at the time

Jay, that S60 one where it moves around the actual map itself is MUCH better IMHO, was a bit of an arse getting from one map to the other on the p8pro i felt.
I wonder if alan intends to release software that works like the new one for the S8 at any point?
hopefully before i have to map that astra as the evil fecking thing scares me so anything that shortens how long i have to be in it under load is a good thing, LOL

chip really once you get used to it , it aint so bad .When i did the tps/rpm map what u see on my logger that time that took about 3 hours including a quite good town and cruise map sorted .
I remember stu comenting once on it that he didnt like the software as of keep fliting back a forth between screens .
Dont think alan will bother with a update as theres a new ecu coming soon the s80 witch will share the same stuff as the s60 but with traction control and more analogs ect

Jay, ive always views the P8Pro as a great ECU, lots of features and very robust it would appear, its ONLY the mapping software i dont like.
The older dos based stuff for it though is more my cup of tea, next time i have a play with yours i will see if i can get hold of a copy of that as it allows you to see your location on the map and edit the map on the same screen.

I havent used the dials yet for any of my mapping but its something i want to try when the car is running again!
I found it easy enough to map at cruise on the live map display, but havent as yet tried it on hard acceleration so not sure how easy that will be!
Otherwise its just as you say, do a a little bit of a run and see what sort of changes you need to make and where, and then edit the main fuel / ignition tables.
I have to admit its not the friendliest software that i have seen, but its workable so thats something. May well buy the S60 and see how easy the new software makes things.......

Ive just been given a top tip on how to live map at 30 pounds of boost and get long enough on a load site:
use the foot brake
Was a serious suggestion of course, but not really something fancy doing personally unless its on a very empty motorway at the time!

it is a complete arse to map, not at all user friendly, the dials do make is 2% better, but its still an arse, i would not buy it because of its mapping software, oh and that fact that the technical backup is shit.
try and map a bike with it on
as for the boost mapping, kenny has always done mine with the foot brake on for loading up, just make sure you have decent brakes

Im not looking forward to being in the astra accelerating hard at 140mph with rob left foot breaking to keep it at the same speed, with the rears locking up and the front still spinning due to 400bhp+ going though them
Definately need to be dialling out the rears on the pedal box before i do the ignition map on that one

Thats what i normally do for a very first run through if ive got no basemap at all really, dial in a load of numbers you KNOW will be very rich, very brief drive, then look at the logs and from that you can build a map thats approx the right shape to start from, but TBH its easier after that to just map a small amount at the time and keep editing bit by bit, as its better to see the response to a small change at a time.
