Default Tuning the 1800 TD lump??? Oil burning ring car!

Ha! Started building collecting bits / building my ring car.

I'm gonna try and combine performance with economy

Should be able to cut the cost of the ring trip down (=happy wife) and still have enough bhp/ton to go well (= happy doug)!

The plan is to run a 1800 Endura turbo diesel lump from am mondy in a stripped out 3dr mk3 fiesta shell. 120 bhp, 150 + f/lb torque and still 50 mpg hopefully.

My question is, does any one know about tuning this engine. I'm not much of a diesel expert. I will be running a front mounted IC and 2.5 inch exhaust system.

From what i understand the easiest way to tune them is to up the boost pressure and then adjust the bosst compensating part of the bosch injector pump??

Is it a case of just adjusting until black smoke and then winding off until it just about disapears??

Any help would be appreciated.

Doug.

Depends on what type of injector pump you have. Merc diesels can run straight 100% veggy from cold.

crap idea IMO.

speak to Heeman (James) about putting a TDCI engine in.

The turbo diesel will be like an anchor and have not enough rev range IMO for a reasonable track car.

Stripped out will just end up with a nose heavy pig!

Might be worth ringing BA kelf body shop in Derby see if they still have my focus 2.0 16v 6 speed TDCI - that was going cheap as there wasn't alot of car left would of been good in a fiesta as easy 130mph (GPS) in a focus was obviously too quick

:
Why do you need rev range? All the race cars/bikes I've ever driven have a much smaller usable rev range than a road version!

There is a difference IMO between rev range and USEABLE rev range...
i.e. a petrol race engine thats peaky still has a large range although its not its fastest when its out of its peak area.

I drive a 90ps TD as my daily driver and although its pretty good its not a rally engine lol its no good on anything twisty - going up through the gears and accelerating its good, plenty of torque and feels strong but coming down when you want to drop for engine braking and then get it to pick up again a turbo diesel is totally different to petrol and its alot lot easier to get it wrong, and either bog it down or buzz it on the limiter.
my 2.0litre TDCI that I had before seemed better but then the 6 speed may of made more of a difference.

turbo engines don't make the greatest track engines IMO and a turbo diesel one is even less great.

then you have the added front end weight of the TD engine...
the common rail TDCI engines seem better and I think the newer ones are lighter? not sure though just assuming from what i've driven.

you probably get similar affects if you put a touring car engine in a rally car and expected the same performance for your 300bhp
