A drive in drive out std rebuild would start from about £3000 (parts below), presuming it already has - greens, 3 bar, chip and stainless exhaust (if not add about £800 -£1000)

Pistons and rings
Valve guides
Bearing set (inc thrusts)
Oil pump
Full gasket set
Small end bearings
Conrod bolts

Rebore and hone block
Regrind crank
Cut and reseat valves
Light head skim

Oil and oil filter
Antifreeze

Depends on what you mean by "rebuild", if its just a freshen up with some major fault fixed, such as a rehone, new rings on standard pistons and pop back together with a couple of new gaskets then it could be only a few hundred quid, but thats NOT a rebuild IMHO, to do the job properly its definately well into the thousands.

chip-3door does it make any sense to e.g. just change piston rings in your opinion?

Assuming of course that bores still keep factory tolerances

if it has piston slap as stated it will require a rebore and new pistons + rings.

cometic gaskets are just that, not grp a which arent much good anyway. by the way they are not reusable no matter what you are told.

I agree with Ian, if its so loose its slapping, its going to need a new block or new pistons or a sleeved block, ie NOT just rings.

I just rebuilt my bottom end keeping original block, so had rebore, crank grind and flywheel skim new pistons all bearings and oil pump new gaskets including cometic head gasket and alcon clutch cost me just over £1400, when I had my head done a couple of years ago cost me about £600 so I would say a minimum £2000 in parts and machining so if someone builds it for you then add another £500 minimum on top of that.
