Default Drink Driving

Is it time to simplify the current laws on this subject ?. Medical research shows we all have a different tolerance level to drink, some people can drink more than others yet it has little effect, now others can drink small amounts and this has a huge amount of effect on there driving abilities, so surely why not just change the law to No Drinking And Driving, everyone then knows what the law is and no arguments either. Is is therefore better to lessen the chance of a drink related accident ?, its not the driver who gets injured I am concerned about, its the innocent victims who suffer.

How exactly would you enforce this? Enough people already get done the morning after they have been drinking, but this could mean that you could be done for drink driving the afternoon after having a drink the night before, or maybe even the following day, or have to ring in sick because you accidentally swallow your mouthwash in the morning.
My brother tried a breathalyser a while back (the poloce van was being repaired in their workshop), hadn't drunk for a week, came up positive????
I was breathalysed after a couple of tinnies last christmas and the copper couldn't tell I'd been drinking!!

A dangerous thread......

I agree totally tho, removes any doubt about what is and isn't allowed. Also removes the temptation for someone to have " just a couple of shandies"

Also removes those people who are badly affected by alcohol even under the legal limit.

I drove after a Pint once and once only..i felt very uncomfortable with it and under no circumstances have any alcohol and drive.....I never drive untill late afternoon the day after a big session either. Thats my way of looking at it, I appreciate other people may see things differently.

I used to drive the 1.4 Escort after a couple quite regularly, but only when I'd had food, now I have a 200+ BHP car I'm a sight more careful, but will still have one after work on a full stomach before driving home (usually before it "kicks in" I go home, and it's only a couple of miles, so doesn't affect me until I get there.)

Probably a good idea IMHO.

Nobody should be driving after a couple of tinnies.

Also, you cant be done for using mouthwash - you may indeed fail a breathalyser, but you sure as shit wont fail a blood test

Neil.

What if you accidentally swallow it, it was an example against zero tolerance driving.
And yes, I was young and foolish

If I'm driving the most I'll have is a pint of shandy or just a half of lager.

I'd completely support a full ban of drinking anything whilst driving. Unfortunately I don't think it would be practicle and would open up all sorts of problems such as mouthwash or driving the afternoon after a few beers.

Zero tolerance is uninforcable and absolutely ridiculous

Jesus, what is wrong with you people

I will drive quite happily after a pint, sometimes even two however I also accept the fact I have a small amount of alcohol in my bloodstream and adjust my driving to suit. i.e. sticking to speed limits, driving cautiously etc.

Anyone supporting zero tolerence are you honestly telling me you have never driven the morning after a meal out???

I also hope that the same people never speed or drive their cars hard as this obviously endangers innocent people as well and would make them hypocrites.

Drinking and driving is wrong and kills people.

Drinking two pints in the space of a sunday afternoon then taking a gentle drive home bearing in mind you have had two pints is not.

I will openly admit i used to be terrible for it. When I first passed my test I was blatently in the pub everynite, would have 3 or 4 pints and drive.

I got a big shock once when i got pulled and questioned as to whether I had been drinking as I "smelt like a brewery" I knew if I had said yes, but only the one, I would have been tested and lost my lisence which, in turn, would lose me my job.

Now, if I am out I will have no more than 2 pints and, like capri sean, my driving style is completely changed to suit. Its nice to have a drink at a social gathering, but a complete ban would be good.

I would like to see a test like they do in the states, balance etc. followed by a blood test if failed - at least it is a better indication of whether you are really able to drive or not.

i do believe that there can be problems with the zero tolerance thing, but if the police have been following you and your all over the road after a pint then you pass a breath test i still think they should be able to charge you

I agree, zero tolerance my arse, " i would never drive after a pint" well give the man a gold star, a lolypop and a round of applause common sense is all that is needed, ill regulary go to the pub have two pints and a few games of pool with my, but ill drink them over the night and change my ussual stella to fosters with a large top, and then make sure i drink water from 10ish until i leave, ive been stopped like this many a time and i often come up green (they regularly do road blocks where i live as there is really only one main road out of the conwy valley) if you stagger into a car pissed then you are a nob, ive driven over the limit once and i felt a twat the next day but at least i will admit it as hand on heart i think that there arent many people who havent
