dvd writer is playing up and only seems to like writing dvds (not CDs)

in my PC I have 3.5" disc, DVD ROM, DVD writer and ive just tried to plug in a CD writer - piggy backed off the grey wide connector and a power input...

but when i turn the PC on... the DVD writer and CD writer are not available and wont install etc (these are on the shared lead)


why is this and is it possible to do what im asking?

 

You installed any software for the drives at all?

Should just recognise them or you could head to the manufacturers site and download from there.

Get into the bios and see if you can detect them there, dont mess with anything else in there though

Slave/master jumper is probably conflicting.

Or are you trying to connect the CD, DVDRW and CDRW off the same cable? If you are then this wont work.

 

Agreed adrian, try different cables for these. that said though i have both optical drives running of the one cable.

Did you set your master slave config at all?

 

Also try - right click on My computer and go to properties - then to - manage - then to - disk management - and make sure your drive is installed/formatted there.

I aint hot on PC stuff, but thats what sorted it for me when I installed my dvd rewriter.

 

bit more info required I think as most of the slave stuff has baffled me...

my PC was...
3.5"
DVD ROM
CD writer....

I changed it to
3.5"
DVD ROM
DVD writer....

thus have a spare CD writer.

I've been struggling to get the DVD writer to do CDs in nero it keeps crashing my PC for some reason and freezing stuff so that new programmes wont launch and already open ones wont close although they seem to operate ok?
anyway

I tried to add the CD writer to the ribbon cable that is attached to the DVD writer... but then it wouldnt find the drivers or even recognise the fact it had them plugged in. only the DVD ROM and 3.5 were available.

id like to make use of the CD writer as its just been out of the PC gathering dust for a while - hence anyway I can set it up?

got something sort of working lol

was slave problem as mentioned above numerous times.
I had the other drive still as the master

the DVD writer is very slow at reading DVDs now though - doesn't open the filing system in explorer on them ?
prob too much through one lead or something? seems to write ok though.

but its working which is a start!!
