Anyone ever sprayed a car with spraycans?
Just out of curiosity has anyone ever sprayed their car with spraycans you buy form the autoshop?
I got some graphite grey metallic paint in a can from the autoshop, obviously primer and lacquer too. I tried it on an inside door (vertical surface, lots of contours etc.) and it turned out great! if i cleaned it and smoothed it it would look bodyshop new!
Anyway was considering doing this to the whole car but i know it'd need a good few cans of paint but as it's a one off i think it'll still be cheaper than buying an air compressor and spray kit and paint etc etc..
Anyway i'm happy with the result on the inside door and it's given me confidence to do the rest.
I'm a cheapstake and don't fancy a proper bodyshop respray lol
bad idea or good if i take my time?
(p.s. any estimates on ammount of cans needed?)

But it was only a mini - and it didnt look too bad - but you could tell.
The only way to get an even cover and not get a stripey effect is to put absolutley shit loads of paint on and rub down / t-cut it back.
Wouldn't do it again. I must have used 20 cans. Thats probably half way to the cost of a cheap repspray.
Whatever you do DO NOT spray the car with metallic paint from a spray can. Trust me it WILL look shit. An aerosol doesn't have the fanwidth to get an even finish.

lol anything has to look better than what it does just now. It was only an idea jeez

Tell you what i'll do, i'll spray a door or summit tomorrow if it's a good day and i'll show you how it looks. I was a bit reluctant at first myself but after spraying the inside i was very surprised.
And i'll leave the post up for more people to laugh at lol, nuthing wrong with a bit of humour

right, seen a bloke in England the evening before Ford Fair spraying his front or rearbumper
(can't remember wich one it was ) with a spraycan!
It looked absolutely like is was done by some professional painter!

Rattlecan resprays look utter sh*t!
I know of at least 3 cars that have had it done, one Keved up & blended Corsa & 2 Novas!

The inside prob. looks ok cos you can only see it from one angle and the light isnt on it. On a big flat pannel like a door or wing, you will be able to see every move you made with the can.
As you wave the can from side to side (or up and down - whatever) the metallic flakes in the paint land at different angles affecting the way they catch the light.
Normally when spraying a pannel your last "drop" coat is sprayed from further away and all at the same angle to get an even coat.
An aerosol cant do this cos if you got far enough from the pannel to cover it evenly.. the paint will be dry before it gets to the pannel.
You might JUST get away with a straight colour.
Why not hire a compressor and spraygun and do it properly if you're feeling that brave.
(incidentally - I'm not a sprayer.. but have made enough balls ups to know what aint going to work )

Hiring an air compressor etc isn't such a bad idea

some of the reasons you get orange peel are shite prep in the primer and top coat much to heavy. You can polish orange peel out of the top coat but it's a mission if you an't got the right gear. As someone above said above you dont get much of a fan with a can! in some paint shops im sure you can get 1/2 ltr pressureized cans that give a good fan and maybe a better finish. A top paint job is mainly down to very good prep. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

You'll get a crap finish from cans. Best bet is to hire a compressor and gun from HSS for about 30 a day. Give it 2 or 3 coats of primer, and then 2 or 3 of paint and polish with G3 cutting polish (make sure you dilute it with water, 6:1)

there is no way you could get a big pannel suck as a bonnet wet all over, plus, with cans you are very likely to get slight differs in shades, its best to get a job lot made up from a motor factors.
about Ł18 a liter of block colour going to about Ł27 for metallic.

PMSL my mate roller brshed his Mk1 fester he had the pan for the roller and everything. He did it on the street in yellow household emulsion too..................

have you ever watched that programme with that mockney twat mike brewer and the geezer who built that motorised sofa? they buy an old banger, the geezer does it up, usually putting on a new panel and sprays it with proper bodyshop made aerosols and then they try and flog it for a profit.
it always looks ok on there, and i don't think that geezer is a bodger. for one panel, i'd say it's the best way, but for the whole car you want a compressor.
paying a lot in a bodyshop does not guarantee you a better finish, so slow down with the pikey comments. you know what they: if you want something done properly, do it yourself.

It was "almost" the same colour as the rest of the car.

yeah, but that's nothing to do with using an aerosol.
that's the risk you take when spraying just one panel, whether it be by aerosol or full on compressor and spray gun setup.

the only bit of my car ive ever sprayed with a can was a bit of the body kit.. it was stone chipped to fuck arround the front part of the rear arch.. it actaully came out ok.. only cos its a relatively small part and is seperate to the actualy bodywork.

Used 3 500ml cans of finest satin black to hide the fact every panel on mine had different shades of primer on it once-upon-a-time
Never bothered to flat it - I just picked the paint off it when I was bored
That was about 3 years ago. It's still not painted
